Electrical Charging Values Help

    manual says I should have 14 to 15 volts at 5000 RPM with low beam on
    measured at the battery terminals with a Fluke
    is this realistic ?
    I am only getting 12.75 volts at 5000 with the low beam on
    charged battery 8 hours on the deltran before testing

    do these regulators go bad ?
    can a battery fail internally and exhibit this symptom ?

    2004 950 adv approx 60,000 , 06 950 SM motor with about 20,000(picked out of a crash)

    battery voltage died at the last 3 miles to home cold temps in the dark from a 850 mile adv weekend ride (some gravel road and on the beach at the ocean edge), worked flawless until the last 3 miles
    cannot detect power drain in off, cannot find any shorts
    wiggled the brown alternator/rectifier connector and no change
    battery is one year old and charges
    voltage dropped slowly, noticed RPM guage acting intermittent in the last 20 miles , so I turned off grip heaters, got another 20 miles, then bike started to sputter turned off the headlight, it quit sputtering, and made the last 3 miles holding a FenixE21 flashlight over the clutch perch, sure was glad to make it into the driveway

    Yes the rectifier regulators do go bad.

    Have you recharged the battery? You should be able to measure the battery voltage when it is being charged - should get over 13.5 volts at least.

    You should check the stator for continuity and insulation. There may be tests you can do on the rectifier regulator - see your manual for more information?

    yes factory shop manual CD
    battery is 13.7 after trickle charge at 8hrs
    12.66v after starting and voltage drops slowly at idle to 3000 rpm or so with no headlight on
    shows volt rise of .01 a second on the deltran charger


    is the regulator tits up or am I missing something ?
    I noticed the big brown connector was warm at the wires after rev test

    ALL charging systems that support PB will put out 13.8v to 14.2v at mid rpm. some system deviate but not by much.

    after charging an AGM to full with a normal battery charger (not a tender) allow to sit overnight. measure resting voltage next morning... full charge is 12.6v to 12.8v range. then for load test, start your bike.

    if say your AGM is 12.8v resting than starts your bike.. odds are your battery is good. if your bike is not putting out voltage within spec's given above... your R/R is bad and/or stator is bad too.

    Does anyone know for sure what Shindengen Mosfet replacement to get ?

    evidently from what I can gather, this Thrisister Shunt on the ktm is prone to failure and underperforms
    same system as the failure prone regulator on the pre-2007 Honda CBR, superceeded to the Shindengen Mosfet
    I think I may as well upgrade to the " regulatorrectifier.com " version
    $150
    unless I can find a good used one cheep

    First one on the list if you can do a little wiring, pick the maxi fuse option instead of the circuit breaker...:deal

    Jack is the best guy in the business. I replaced my reg/recitfier with 1 of his custom made to fit your bike jobs. Excellent results. Sent all the way to Australia as well. :D

    AWESOME UPGRADE !

    just finished install and testing

    14.4 volts steady at 5000 rpm

    easy wire up but took my time cleaning grit and soldering, routing etc.

    nice fit , only drilled one hole in the bracket and added a 6mm speed nut used the other original

    I highly recomend the Roadstercycle.com Shindengen Mosfet regulator rectifier kit , comes with everything needed for a foolproof upgrade, great service fast shipping.:beer
