Elka or the new Touratech rear shock...

    Thinking hard about upgrading that rear shock now. Just not sure which one to get. Ohlins... heard they don't hold up long and I don't want to have to mess with rebuilding too often. Rookie with mechanical skills but assisting Dan installing the Indy kit helped my fears. That Indy kit sure did make a difference because the stocker was pretty much frozen there. Anyway - pros/cons of either one of those? Price will be high no matter but bonus time is coming. Thanks to the collective.

    Had ELKA on my '05 GS..good kit but coming from Canada, shipping sux..keep this in mind when sending back for yearly rebuilds..

    No experience with the TT stuff..looks like every other aftermarket shock out there..in general..TT has a reputation of being backordered or broken..that being said..I don't personally have alot of their stuff..a riding buddy does and wouldn't even consider their shock recently...

    I run Hyper Pros now..very pleased, service is excellent..

    Have you looked at Race Tech, Yacguar...?

    I would get the Elka 3 way with hydraulic preload and adjustable length.
    Elka has an awesome adjustment range and high quality construction.
    You can use my shock mount kit with a new bearing on the Elka.

    I don't think you can go wrong with any of the 3-way adjustable rears. Anything less than 3 way and you're wasting your money.

    Elka
    Wilbers
    Hyperpro/Yacugar (Same shock, different colors and name)

    Personally, i'd stay away from Ohlins, I have seen way too many issues. I'd need a compelling argument backed by facts and data to sway me.

    Elka will make what ever you want from their base design I had them make me a custom shock for a Versys with a resultant 8" of travel and my spring sleection and dampening choices. All braided cable lengths and angles I specified for hydraulic preload and gas reservoir.
    You don't want to make a $1,500 mistake so I only recommend full customs for suspension gurus.

    I would send Alex an email Alex@konflictmotorsports.com and get his take on the TT shock , he has worked with TT shocks since they first cama out .

    So you have an Elka for F800GS with built-in height adjustment? They told me there was insufficient room to add that to mine.

    I see many negative statements about ohlins with one saying they need data to change their mind, I am along the same thought about data but I would need it to prove that they are bad or not comparable to the other system. I have an ohlins rear with minimal issues on it. All suspensions require maintenance. Be wary as a consumer about anecdotal advice, both good and bad. I think the best advice given so far is that all of the upgrades are good systems, and unless you did a direct side by side it would be hard to know what fits your needs the best.

    I do not have a piggy back for mine so I pop the seat to adjust it. This saved me a couple hundred but it isn't as convenient. It does reduce maintenance though and the likelihood of additional parts failure. To each is own. If money isn't and option I do like the tractive kits as I have ridden a few bikes with them but I have no exp with Elka.

    Ohlins is good stuff if you have a shop set it up for you and your bike.
    It just that us old school guys were used to Ohlins being superior many years ago and now they are just overrated and many companies make a superior product.

    This is one of the biggest downsides of internet forums like this. Furthermore, "I heard that" lacks credibility doubly so because it's hearsay anecdotes! Alas, the motorcycle consumer doesn't have much in the way of Consumer Reports or Which?, so we are left with the task of sorting the empirical wheat from the bullshit chaff.

    Guess they've changed it then. Wasn't available a year ago (as you can see from my photo). I do recall some discussion back then about errors in the Elka promo material. All I can say is, if you plan to buy one, verify it with Elka if it matters to you (it didn't to me).

    I'm loving the TT Highend on my bike. Offroad/Onroad they hold up pretty well and even jumping the bike a couple of times never managed to bottom it out. I know that in US they are a heck more expensive then here in europe so I'd go with another brand over there but here the price is just the same as the other 3way suspensions

    Elka has a service center in CA. I did not have to send mine to Canada.

    When installing, you pretty much have to remove the carbon canister to fit the reservoir decently.
