Ethanol BS!

    So, I've had my '06 ADV since may of this year. I've been to Canada and back with some commuting too.
    Bike started running weird a few weeks ago. Gas all over the place. Fuel leaking down onto the one of the heads.
    Did some research here and it sounded like a float bowl malfunction. I didn't have time to mess with it so i took it to the shop (Eric's in Pasadena). They know KTM's. Well, they called with the diagnosis. Bowls ruined by ETHANOL.
    He said i should start using a fuel additive. Any tips from y'all would be appreciated. Now i wait for parts Yeah.

    I feel for you...this is a big fiasco.

    Here's how to deal with this:

    1- I use 93 or 89 Octane "Top Tier" Fuels for they have great Fuel additvies like Techron from Chevron, etc. (more of a chance to little or no Ethanol.)

    2- Periodically use SeaFoam or StarTron Fuel Additive (perhaps about 1x month or if Bike is left to sit for more than 2 weeks.

    This should mitigate or eliminate your ethanol problems.

    I just started looking. Tough in SoCAL. Thanks for the link. And those are some nasty lookin' carb pics. Wow.
    I am familiar with Seafoam, Use it in my Rover. Gluten for punishment, right!?
    I'll try to be more consistent with my fuel provider and go with Chevron techron. Thanks!

    I had my 450 KTM go out on me 700 miles from home. Come to find out the ethanol eat the rubber seals out of the carb. Rebuilt it and have been running STA-BIL Ethanol treatment for boats in my bikes and small motors every since. It take a 1/2 oz for five gallons. One quart will do 320 gallons and run about $20 bucks. Are I read once there is a web site that well tell you what gas station have non ethanol fuel for sale. You may try that.

    I run the non-ethanol fuel every chance I get. I'm lucky to have a station nearby. My bike runs noticeably better on it, plus it gets better mileage. It's about a dollar a gallon more expensive but I believe it's worth every penny.

    Maybe I'm just lucky. I have been running 10% ethanol gas for a few years now in my '04 950, and have seen no ill effects. I use no Sea Foam or any other additives, but my carbs still have no gunk in them.

    However, I do wish I could get pure gasoline on a regular basis, for the performance, and mileage advantages.

    don't leave fuel sitting in the bike for more than a week if you don't treat it. problems solved. stabil marine, lucas ethanol treatment, startron, etc.



    if you buy fuel at chevron there's already techron treatment in it. I might be mistaken but I don't think techron prevents the effects of ethanol

    Got the 950 back. It runs great. Filled up at chevron with 87 octane and added Lucas ethanol gas treatment.
    They had another 950 in there with the same symptoms.
    Hope the additive works well.
    Cost me $700
    Carbs cleaned and jetted for Leo Vince pipes. New floats. New plugs.
    New oil and filter + labor.

    Ethanol is a disaster in so many ways. Where I live you can not buy EO anywhere. For winter storage on all my gear I bought a can of Av gas. Ethanol in airplanes is illegal. Gee, I wonder why?

    Storage Works ... Just a heads up on Aviation Fuel "100LL" or otherwise known as "100 Octane Low Lead"

    It burns slower than Automotive gas ... It will still be burning as it passes by your exhaust valves ...

    Yup. And the lead can leave deposits and wreck the cats if you still have the stock boat anchor pipes and the higher octane isn't necessary. But I'm just talking one tankful.

    My concern is over the winter while I'm buried in snow - I like to periodically fire up and run my bike to full hot to burn off moisture and keep fresh oil circulated to avoid pits from moisture sitting in one place on a bearing surface and I like to keep fuel in the system to avoid drying out gaskets and such. To my thinking E10 ethanol is like putting a glass of water in your tank. I don't mind (too much) running it but I sure as hell don't want it sitting in the tank turning to shite and gumming up the carbs and eating the rubber parts.

    Another concern I have is the plastic tank warping.

    100LL sounds like your best winter solution ... Short runs ...

    Without a fluid (Ethanol) that pulls moisure out of the air like a sponge ...

    Sorry to hear about your fuel problems and know you are not the only one. This semi combustable swill being passed off as fuel is a real problem for sure. The dealer where I bring my motorcycle say's they average 1 fuel pump repair/replacement a week because of ethanol related problems. Here are the recommendations of my dealer and of an independent BMW mechanic I also go to. 1) Ride the shit out of the bike, apparently ethanol becomes an issue when the fuel is allowed to sit a couple weeks. 2) If you know you will not run through a tank in a week or two and occassionally anyway, add Startron or similar to the fuel, which will stabilize the fuel and not allow the fuel to separate. Then about every 3K add some Techron or Sea Foam to the tank. This has been my MO and seems to be working.

    I added some Startron fuel stablizer to the Adventure last week and ran the motor 10 minutes in the barn. I checked last night and my fuel pump has started leaking with a drip every 30 seconds! I snugged down the four 8 mm mounting bolts and they all turned half to 3/4 turns tighter. Checked this morning and the fuel pump is dry. Anyone one else have trouble with gaskets or O-rings with Startron?

    It does seem strange that the leak started just shortly after adding Startron, but it could just be bad timing on the part of the o-ring!

    One of the symptoms that that occurred when this whole thing went down was fuel lock. Fuel was leaking onto the cylinder head causing it to lock up. Battery draining cranking:wings . It dawned on me that i installed a fuel pump Carter (NAPA P74021). And i read somewhere that these aftermarket pumps can keep flowing after the bike sits for a few days via gravity. Like it did after i had the carbs rebuilt. LOCK UP! I cranked the hell out of it and it finally fired up. Solution? turning off fuel at the left side petcock. Seems to be fine now. I will repost this info in an appropriate place too. Just a heads up!
