    Hello Joe!
I've heard of your trips some years ago ;-) (from one czech KTM-maniac)
Have a great trip and as many of us I am really interested in how is your new 1190 doing.
    Ride safe!!

    Joe,

Are you a KTM employee? Ever worked for KTM? Being compensated in any way? Is there KTM support on the trip?

Just want to get this out in the open before the trip begins. Looking forward to watching.

Joe, thanks for coming onto the forum.

I hve to say I am very keen to follow your trip and see how the bike performs. There are many armchair riders out here who have dismissed the off road capabilities of the 1190 R based upon photos. I suspect your ride will be a great opportunity to confirm (or at least I hope it will confirm !!) that the new machine is perfectly capable offroad.

Fingers crossed I will be collecting my 1190R in mid February and will be heading to Morocco with it a month or two later ................

    Joe,

As one of the first people to do a real 'public' test of the 1190 you are likely to be bombarded with questions !

Can I kick off with a tyre question - the 990 Adventure has a 2.15 inch wide rim on the front and a 4.25 inch rim on the rear and uses a 90/90-21 front and 150/80-18 tyres.

What size tyres are you planning to use and how well do they fit on the wider rims of the 1190 R ?

And how many miles will it do to a tank of fuel !!

    Thanks !

    I'm not emplyed by KTM.
I get support from KTM Austria, since a couple of years. Otherwise I would't get the bike 3 month before the official start of selling.
On the trip I'm alone, as it was on all the trips I've done since 30 years and 300.000 km..

    I'll use the Pirelli Sorpion Rally 90/90 21" and 140/80 18"
The same tyres I've used on the 950/990 Adventure.

I'll also change the rims to the same rims with I have used he last years.

This is 2,50 inch on the rear and 1,85 on the front.

I've been yust riding 300 km with the new bike, so its hard to say how many miles you can go on one tank.
But a lot more then with the old one. In normal conditions I think it should be around 400 km or even more, but we'll see.

You definitely cannot compare LWR and my trip.
LWR was a real marketing trip with a lot of support and money involved.
On my trip to Africa, there are no support cars, camera guys etc. on the way.
I’ll be riding the first part with a friend from Addis Abeba, then alone and the last part with my wife Renate on the back.
But still I'll try to give you as much backup as possible from the trip.
And will send you plenty of pictures.

In the offroad modus you can switch the 1190 to a bad fuel maping.

    Have a great trip Joe.
Will you be doing any more modifications to the bike other then rim sizes or is it your plan to run the bike out of the showroom? and see how it performs. If possible your pre-trip preparation of the 1190r would be of great interest.
    Regards Dave

Before I start next week the trip, I'll show you a few pictures from the trip last year in North Kenia and Ethiopia.

It was not easy along the eastcoast of lake Turkana, but then much harder on the west side of the Omo river.

And the final highlight in January 2012 was the Danakil dessert

I will be watching this for sure.

I looked at your website and it would be great if I could read it. Is there any plans to have a English or Australian version :)
