EWS Immobilizer antenna threadfest

    Isn't the Antenna..just that..an antenna...

    It's the bike's CPU that knows what key is what..no the Antenna?

    It's strictly a receiver and thats it, there is no logic or hard drive or anything to the antennae other then being a pathway for the key's code to get to the theft deterrant system, no programming required. The BMSK is already programmed with the correct key codes and as long as it gets that information it's good to go. While some of the shit on these things is rocket science, the ring antennea is not. Furthermore if the BMSK recognizes a failing EWS it will generate a code and then the GT1 at the dealer comes into play to clear that fault code. However on the couple that have failed around here, only 50% of them generated a component failure code.

    Before, you sounded pretty certain. :)

    Just as Bob describes, the antenna is just a part, like any other sensor. And every tech who's gone through training knows this, not just that one dude.

    Nice to know. Now a couple stragegically placed antenna rings around the country, and overnight mail, and problem solved!:thumb

    I am feeling MUCH better about this situation now.

    I might even spring for one. Maybe we could have an ADV antenna pool?:D

    It IS sad the even "I" sometimes fall into the internet fear frenzy, being that I am usually the one cautioning against it.

    The difference with this one is, for me, that there is now warning. I can fix most things, and see them coming, but this is a knockout blow that is not detectable.

    Oh well, I am likely worried about nothing, and am not really THAT worried. Bobby says most of them happen to low mileage bikes, and that doesn't apply to mine!:thumb

    then could you place the EWS ring and antenna together in a out of the weather place on the bike and then use a regular key to start the bike ?

    Correct, but I do not feel failures are weather related as much as electrical component failure percentages. It truly is a rare event, but show stopper non the less if it does happen. I'd worry about it maybe just a tad more then Dr ABS's concerns in the scale of things. Difference here is it's not a safety issue and you can plan for the inevitable as it's easy to fix and pack with you. It would definitely be a piece to pack if let's say a group of R12's were heading on a long road trip. Just be careful removing or cutting the tie wraps holding the wiring harness in place around the ignition switch/antennae area. We are fixing a K12GTtoday that another dealer replaced the antennae on a little bit ago and just barely clipped one of the ignition wires, it broke on a road trip yesterday while the gent was in our neck of the woods, we're fixing it now.

    Larry's bike had 11,000 miles on it when it crapped out. He said if it would have happened about two days earlier, he would have needed a helicoptor to get him out!!!:huh

    The dealer in Edmonton only had the part by fluke-it was for another customer.

    I know I will be taking a spare to South America in September. My bolts are drilled out already and I just have to make sure I have the proper tools for the swap.

    Just got a call from the dealer- says they cannot just order that part. Need to prove ownership etc with BMW before they can even order it. Hence the reason that no one stocks it??

    this is really good to know. Mine crapped out on my first DV trip at 1100 miles and I was stranded about 160 miles from home. The EWS light came on and I thought I was finished. As odd as it sounds I kept playing with the engine kill switch and I replaced my key with the plastic one and the bike started up. I rode it home without shutting it off. the next day it started up fine. Went to the dealer who did not find a fault. It's been 8 months now and 5K miles later and no repeat. I still wonder if it will ever show up again. I just might spring for it also.

    There are ways... Besides, stupid comment from the dealer. If the key is still needed for it to work, what is the point in not selling one? Useless without the original key!

    Do I need to clear the fault code before the bike will start (assumming I've replaced the antenna)?

    Nope, bike will run just fine with a stored fault as long as whatever component caused the failure is not failing any more.

    I'm happy to hear that the antenna can be repaired without needing to ship the entire bike to a dealer. That makes all the difference to my perception of the machine. Still will be out of luck if the parts are on backorder.
