The new 07 GS would NOT start with the spare key...the strange thing.. after it sat in the parking lot for about 2 days it decided to start on the first morning the dealer was open..as I said they drilled one out of a new bike....The owner had tried to start it many times and ..no go...This is a major bullshit item...if someone is going to steal a bike they don't give a damn about a key. This is just a disaster waiting to happen with no fix available...

This is not good, does the the Hp2 have this wonderfull option. How could anyone in Australia put up with this. We have one dealer here, if I travel 9 [850 kms ] hours East there is another, 36 hours west [ 2500 kms ] another and 15 hours north [ 1500 kms ] another. What do you do in between ????. At least with cars here when this option fails, you turn the ignition on, wait around 30 mins and the system is over ridden. Thanks Gum.

    2. this has been going on for almost 3 years.... that's the WORST THING ABOUT IT.....
BMW has done NOTHING to fix this 3-YEAR OLD PROBLEM

    very very embarrassing

Yes, the HP2 has it and Enduro racer Jimmy Lewis who was racing one in Baja had an EWS error and could no longer race. :baldy

BMW must track the number of spare parts sold and warranty claim parts used. We hear about EWS issues here but what is the general failure rate? No one knows for sure.

And unless the option to bypass the system is offered from the factory, there's nothing you can do start the bike. The only advantage of the immobilizer is if the bike is stolen it can only be used for parts.

The parts are worth more than the sum total in many cases so where is the up side to this

Has anyone of us contacted BMW about this problem? Instead of relying on them to "trace parts sold" and INFER that there is a problem from that information?
We should all contact BMW about this and any other problem. Not that it will do any good, but at least we're not relying on them to figure it out from parts sold.
    ????
I would be VERY interested in a way to bypass this thing. I've seen the error a few times on my dash, but haven't paid any attention to it, just turned the key off and back on again. Now I feel like it is a ticking bomb waiting to go off.
Has anybody contacted the GS911 manufacturers to see if they could come up with something?
I'm with Gadget Boy, the challenge is on!

If they went ahead and fixed the problem then they couldn't sell keys for $100 a pop.

When I said "they drilled one out of a new bike" (actually both bikes)... the deal is: the screws that hold the unit in have "one way" heads so your "potential thief" cannot walk up and take it out with a screwdriver....so the only way to get it out I guess is to drill out the heads of the screws...that is what the dealer did to get both units out...the scary thing about this is that there is no warning and when you stop out in BFE to take a leak you might be camping there..the weather is great in Death Valley this time of year....

:huh About 2 years ago my 2005 (Mar 04 build date) R1200GS puked it's antenna ring. To say I was pissed off was an understatement. At the time all I knew was that my relatively new motorcycle was no worky worky. All this wiz bang techno crap is worthless when a bike that should run cannot. The imobilizer should be an option at purchase time. You pay for a premium product it should perform that way. Good luck with your scoot. Peace.

Groan..... Road side support just picked up the bike and it's off to the dealer... I wish they would just disable this 'feature'. That would be the real fix.

I had the EWS error appearing twice than after the 3rd attempt no problem anymore. Back at home I checked with the GS 911 and could not see any fault. :confused

Can you imagine if your product was as discussed as we discuss bikes in this forum, how valuable it would be to you as a manufacturer? I would kill for this kind of information regarding my customers, my product, how it performs, how they feel about my service, my company, etc. etc. Hell if I was BMWNA I would have people dedicated to surfing this and other similar forums, compiling information on all of this, comparing it to dealer warranty claims, following up on good and bad dealer service reports, and so on.

Question is: do they take advantage of it? do they care? do they use it only as a gage as to how deep they can gouge us? How far they can push it? Anyone in the know regarding BMWNA´s awareness and interest or lackthereof of this and other forums??

This happened a few weeks ago while out riding with my wife. She got on her bike, started it and and was ready to go. I sat there confused that mine wouldnt start, "EWS" appeared on the screen. It was the first I'd seen anything like that before. I tried a couple of times and looked at her. She asked what was wrong and I told her..."It wont start" :dunno

Now...there just happend to be about 6 other sport bikers parked close by, they were all gathering around their bikes and checking us out during this little side show.

She said...."what do you mean it won't start...you gotta push the button!"

I was sort of aggravated by that comment, as if..what do you think I've been doing!" :becca

So in my "I'll show you what the hell is wrong attitiude"....I turned the key, looked over at her pushing the button for the 10th time.....thinking....."tell me to push the button!!!..what am I stupid?!....

I pushed the button and it started right up. :huh

She looked at me....shook her head as if "what the hell's wrong with you?!" Then drove off.

:kboom MAN..THAT BIKE MADE ME LOOK STUPID!!! :lol3

Look in the back of your owner's manual. Address and phone numbers.

The immobilizer seems to be most effective at stranding owners as opposed to thieves.. Maybe if BMW racks up enough towing and warranty expense they will trash the immobilizer or at least make it a option. Vote in the poll and maybe they will listen to their customers. :lol3 http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=228476
