2 hives, both fresh colonies. The two that were here last year didn't make it over the winter. They still had plenty of food. Winter was mild. The one was quite strong in November. ???? We'll see what happens this year. So far it has been dicey with cold weather and dead queens.

There was a ton of dead bees in there. she has found them empty in the past. Two winters ago a hive starved. Plenty of bees but not a speck of honey.

Ahhh Spring vacation. It was a tad chilly when I rolled out this morning. The good news was that I had Hickory Nut Gap and NC 194 from Banner Elk to Valle Crucis all to myself. That never happens.

I met Kyle B at the state line. Neither one of us was in much of hurry to get going as the sun was doing its job.

We went over Brushy Fork and down the North Fork of the New and then back over Big Laurel into Mountain City and then on up into Damascus.

We then went over Hurricane Road to check out Barton Gap. We agreed that DRZ research needed to be done first. My memory had proven to be faulty once already today. I didn't know if I could get across Hurricane Creek with my feet dry.

Kyle's dried coconuts are like eating donuts.

It may have been a good thing that we didn't do Barton Gap because the gate was closed due to a slide. There was no getting around the gate on this end. Time for a wheel wash.

We took VA 16 over to Fox Creek and down through Konnarock and on into Damascus.

Backbone Rock down into Shady Valley was tempting but I had to get back for dinner. We went down 91 to Mountain City and parted ways. Can't wait to do it again.

I gassed up in Mountain City and went to Old 421 to 321 to Kellersville. I wanted to see if Andy Hicks was as good as I remember it.

    Yep

    Nice views

Lee Gualtney snowdrift. It will probably get bigger before it gets smaller.

    Coolest piece of artwork ever.

I had Hickory Nut Gap all to myself AGAIN. From Newland, I went to Linville and slabbed 181 back to Morganton.

You know spring is just around the corner when the semi-annual Kyle migration is completed.

Is the cat out of the bag for spring now?

The potential energy stored in this mulch is almost too much to comprehend.

We barely got to the good stuff and a flat tire!

Plenty of people on FR 187 this afternoon. Hope to meet up with these fellows again. Actually, we did down in Upper Creek.

Even with all of the pieces sitting in the garage, getting around to this job has been tough. Marion Gaborik and Billy Wagner would approve.

Time to finally make use of my Brown Mountain pass.

As usual, the water was unpredictable. Not much in the way of puddles, but streams where I have never seen running water before.

2 was kind of sloppy. I don't get it with the trail maintenance. Two guys with shovels could drain every slophole on trail 2 in a day, maybe two. Instead, they have tracked vehicles with jackhammers to bust up the rocks so the four wheelers can carry 50 quart coolers rather than just 30 quart coolers. I'm sorry, was I ranting?

I had never seen this waterfall before. I have a hiking destination.

If memory serves me, that might be the falls where the ranger arrested Samsquamch.

New bicycle. :clap The rain is killing me. This is waaaay the nicest bicycle I have ever owned. I'm not getting it muddy yet.

I had a little "homework" assignment at 30 minutes to quitting time today. With that task dispatched, it was time get one in before it starts raining again.

Lost Cove. The sun was almost coming out.

Snowflakes were blowing around at Grandfather.

Wilson Creek was flowing over 221.

The winter will not go away. It was 37 and a sustained 30 mph wind in Newland on my way to Hampton. I was in the truck, so it wasn't too bad. I learned much today.

I got to Hampton High School and unloaded. These fellows were waiting for me.

First destination: Flatwoods. I always enjoy a spirited romp across this road.

What's up with the dust? We have NO dust over here on the eastern seaboard.

Who doesn't love roads with no paint? Terrorists.

We crossed 421 and made the run up into Damascus. Apparently everyone is up to speed on what's good for them because all of the parties impeding our progress on US 58 pulled over and let us by.

A few months ago, Lucky and I turned back because this road had Jersey barriers across it and road closed signs. The signs are still there, but the barriers are pushed to the side.

I was nervous riding across this on my DRZ. I would need a very good reason to do it in my truck. Layla once backed our Tercel (it was scary going forward) through about a quarter mile of collapsed road like this in the dark, with a raging stream next to it in Japan.

I had a few raindrops on the windscreen in this part.

It was windy in Shady Valley as well.

Let's just say that it's a good thing that this is a gap at the top of a mountain.

Just down the hill from here we found "the end of somebody's bumper" lying in the middle of the trail. Wait, it has a lot of fancy fasteners, it's a skidplate, and it's covered with oil. :eek1 Luckily, Kyle shut down when he heard a funny noise. Hole in oil filter.

Among the things I learned today was how to tow a motorcycle. A strap from footpeg to footpeg is the business. I wish I had known that out on Big Levels.

They are off to Bristol. As curious as I was about how these guys would do a pillion trip across the Snake, strongmendieyoung and I were headed in the other direction.

We headed up to Mountain City to get to Locust Gap. I almost found it.

Strongmendieyoung showed me an alternate route up to Walnut Mountain.

We cruised down through Dennis Cove and back out to Hampton High School, home of the Bulldogs.

I got 200 miles for the day. Thanks for having me along. Here's hoping everyone's rig is ready for the Rendezvous. :freaky

I've never seen Kyle in such a compromising position.

You suck, BTW. I so need to get a smaller bike and do some riding with you, it always looks like you have a blast.
