The beauty spot is on Beauty Spot Gap Road, aka FR230. It is near the Nolichucky. In fact, when I split from those guys, I went down the hill to the Nolichucky put-in. Very neat place.

I wouldn't have known that it was chip sealed. It was fine, no loose gravel to speak of.

Sunday ride. The traction on Maple Sally Road was almost too good. No drifting, which is what I went out there for. It's still fun to keep it in a higher gear and rail it around turns though.

Over Schoolhouse and up Edgemont Road to Gragg. Lucky is layering back up. He worked up a sweat on Maple Sally.

There are several logging clearings in the area that offer really nice views. The birds and squirrels probably don't agree.

From here you can see how big Wilson Ridge is.

We had to jump over several blowdowns on Yancey Ridge.

We knocked out about 90 miles. I was cold when we got back to town.

Layla was off to the Laurel Fork of the Doe and the Watauga. Be careful, baby!

It was 59 degrees at 8:40 when I left, but large amounts of air from points north was coming to see us.

Note how the moving air disturbs the surface of the lake.

As the above photo suggests, the atmospheric conditions at the Blue Ridge were not as ideal. Osborne Knob is a nice little dead end that is worth running down if you are out that way. I ate my cream cheese and lox sammich out there.

I met HalcyonDaze and Cuttle at the Ingles in Burnsville. People as crazy as I am! They believed my tale of sunny weather and upper 50s in McDowell County. We backtracked up 80 and over Seven Mile. We dropped down Peppers Creek, through North Cove and around the back of Lake James. We rolled through Paupers Flat, Nebo, Glenwood, Sugar Hill and Old Fort before we stopped at Exit 75 for gas, nuts, and Christmas cookies. These guys got the long shadow tour of the Western Piedmont.

    We headed up Curtis Creek.

We went straight over Curtis Creek Gap down to 80.

We rolled down 80 toward Burnsville. I peeled off at Seven Mile. Let's see: that's three runs of Seven Mile, three runs of the back of the lake, and two runs of 226A in one day. Not bad.

More long shadows. To the left.

    To the right.

225 miles for the day. Thanks to HalcyonDaze and Cuttle for coming out. Hope to ride again soon. Happy New Year!

Just a few pics of today's ride.

Down around 1250' there is no snow to speak of.

Getting up closer to the top of the hill, there is plenty of snow, especially in the shadows.

The store at the top of 181 is open and has gas. They are still working on the inside. The proprietor tried to sell me a leather jacket and a wallet.

I went down Mortimer Road and down along Wilson Creek. There was a touch of snow along Wilson below Mortimer. Ran into two guys on DS bikes heading up the creek at 4:00.

I don't know the name of it, and I had to turn around because of blowdown. Not sure it will get cleaned up until next hunting season.

    Braaaap!

Don't get too carried away with that thing.

I don't know how it could have melted, but there was a lot less snow over on Pineola Mortimer than there was yesterday.
