My 2011 F650GS is kicking the radiator fan on if I ride in city traffic for more than 4 blocks or after my 30 minute 70mph commute while I park it. If I idle at a stoplight for about two minutes I get the yellow engine engine warning light and my temperature gague flashing. Ambient temperature is about 75 degrees Fahrenheit. My coolant is full but darker in color I don't know what color it was to start. The bike runs at an appropriate temperature if it is kept above 30mph. I have cleaned the radiator already.

I recently got back from a rally where I rode two up (heavy loading offroad). I had no overheating problems at the rally but did have trouble on the way home. I punched the oil pan on the ride so I am heasitant to try to waranty the bike only to find I have to pay for engine surgery.

This bike also has gear shift indication problems in 5th gear but that has been happening since I bought the bike.

Any off the hip suggestions? Is this another problem with this model or am I fucked?

When was the last time you changed your oil? Is the rad clean or full of bugs?

    The great state of confusion
Has the coolant been changed recently?

It is difficult to bleed all the air out of the coolant systems on the twins.....

Run your hand carefully across the front of the radiator and see if it is uniformly hot....
If not you likely have air in the system

There's a thread here on bleeding air out ...

+ 1....wife had to get the air out of her 650gs after she picked it up from the dealer. Same symptoms as you describe.
