F800GS Losing oil

    I was talking to a guy at a bike meet who told me that his bike had been losing/using oil and that the most he had to top it up by was 1.5L his bike had only done about 6k. So i checked mine this afternoon and found mine had lost about 500ml in 1800 miles since i did the oil change, i know the rocker gasket is seeping oil but not enough to make a noticeable difference.

    Is anyone elses f8 losing oil?

    Not mine, however I have only 7,700 miles on it so far.
    Every time I've checked the oil level it was spot-on. That's made me a bit complacent and I haven't been checking it as regularly as I should.

    I haven't noticed any oil loss on mine, but it only has a few thousand miles on it so far.

    Not saying you're mistaken by any means but...

    When checking the oil make sure you check it the same every time. I.E. fully warmed up, on center stand and right after shutting it off. If you don't warm it up fully one time, wait a few minutes after shutting it off or even put the dip stick in crooked when you check, the level showing on the dip stick could be significantly different and lead to unnecessary worry. When the oil level goes UP between checks, you'll know this is more than likely the problem.

    I'm having 17K miles on mine and no oil usage whatsoever.

    Make sure you follow the procedure/instructions in the book. If the bike wasn't fully warmed up the oil won't make it back 'home' and you get a low reading. Not having it level will give false readings as well (low or high - depending on which side it leans towards).

    My 2005 F650GS barely ever used a drop of oil. It looks my F800GS is the same way. These Rotax engines are precision machines.

    My XR650L will use oil when it's pushed hard.

    If the bike is still under warranty, I suggest talking to your dealer about it. Typically they will ask you to measure oil consumption over a fixed period of miles, like 1000 miles. There's a threshold of acceptable oil use for every bike.

    Pretty much every manufacturer is saying a quart of oil per 1000 miles is "normal". To use that much oil is a sure sign that the engine is "on its last legs".

    I hate to ask the obvious but are you checking the oil level when the engine is hot as it states in the manual?

    If you are checking a cold engine, then yes, you will add oil and it will get pissed out the breather when the engine warms up.

    I have found that mine doesn't use a drop. I have never had to add oil between changes. I hope it is something this simple for you.

    Reminds me of the oil usage on the 1150GS. Guys would fill it right to the top of the sight glass and it would get "used" up till it was at about the halfway mark. If you did nothing it would stay there. If you added oil it would "burn" it.
    Mine 800 hasn't changed level in the last 4000kms. Reads at the min mark if it isn't warmed up.

    Did a mad 300mile run around wales on sunday and it didn't lose a drop makes me wonder how accurate the 2.9l stated in the manual is.

    Never seen a drop leak... cept from my forks!!! I'm going to give those techs at my dealer an earful if they can't stem the flow from my forks, they have worked on them a few times now, aftermarket springs and oil.
