F8GS rear brake anchor plate - play/movement

    Today I changed the rear tire and last step was putting the abs-sensor back in place. At this stage I realized that I can move the brake caliper forward and back abuot 4 millimeters (0, 16 inches). Its the anchror plate which moves not the caliper itself. I checked everything again, the wheel is perfectly aligned, the axle nut is tight and no spacers or shims remained on the garage floor. So this might be normal but I'd feel better if I really knew......:evil

    Pls guys can one of you go and check if this is the same on your bike.

    The caliper bolts directly to the mounting bracket with very very limited play, this in turn is secured by the rear axle and it is permitted to slide forward/back by the axle sliding back and forth. My caliper has no noticeable forward/backward movement with manipulation by hand. Is your axle torqued to spec? Do you have the rear lined up/square and resting on the axle adjustment bolts?

    Yes, everthing is as it should be. As I said, axle nut is tightened. The caliper itself does not move, the bracket or plate where the caliper is bolted to moves, in fact it turns on the axle fwd and back. Its not much. Will try to make a video clip maybe tomarrow...

    If the bracket is locked into place by the axle and the slot in the bracket is lined up with the guide on the swingarm you shouldn't have any rotational/lateral/front-back movement (definitely not 4-5mm). The caliper has some modest play with the bracket but that is due to the type of mounting bolts. If you pulled your rear to balance it, inspect your equipment again and double check. I put my wheel together in a hurry once and put the left/right spacers on the wrong side and that created an issue.

    Thanks for your help, most appreciated! Problem solved.

    I installed the rear wheel without the spacer on the right side, item #28 in the second drawing. Reinstalled it and its fine now. I did not realize that it is missing as nothing fell down or remained on the garage floor. It remained on the axle (centering pin) of my tire mounting tool when I took the wheel of it stuck on the axle which I didnt notice.

    Good deal. Just for good measure, re-inspect the swing arm, and all the other hardware, as it now have been torqued to a less wide hub. I think the swing arm will accept that just fine, as it flexes quite a bit, and it is a tight fit to start with, but when you torque items like that, it can distort items that makes contact, where clearances are minimal. Just to be safe.... Perhaps you have already double, and triple checked it.....

    Thanks for the hint. Yes I checked everything, the swingarm itself is no problem. As you say it flexes and we are talking about less than 0,15 inches. I also checked the ring (#27 in fig. 2)which now shows a small impression (hope that is the right word) from the swingarm which made contact to it. But nothing serious, just a little mark. All other components I checked are also OK, so nothing to worry about :1drink

    :D Yeah, well.... No. It is definitely far to warm for the time of the year. We had 10 degrees Celsius (50 F) but should have between 0 and -5 (32 and 22).
    But I am a greedy bastard and gave back my license plate (to the authorities/registration office) to save the monthly liability insurance fee for the next few month :evil So I cantride anyway....

    Whenever I keep the plate and pay, the weather is #¥@@$!!! but if I give them back the weather is decent :becca
