Facet #40171 Users Check In

    Here is what a Facet Engineer said to me when I talked with him:

    "Install Outlet End Above Inlet by abt 30 degrees Recommends 74 Micron Filter (Not 10-15 Micron - Too Fine/Restrictive)"

    Unfortunately, most of the Filters you find at Auto Parts stores, aren't even marked with these numbers... even the ones that do come from places not doing well with quality and would be hard pressed to prove they even do filter what is stated.

    So are you suggesting that the "yellow blob" problem may be attributed to ethanol and that a less dense filter may pass the blob? Sounds like it could work that way..... I don't know the micron rating of my filter. It is an off the shelf auto parts store deal--nothing special.

    Ethanol acts like and is a Solvent and for example, could/does disolve some finishes/resins off the Storage Tanks/Lines etc, into a suspended liquid form that is small enough to pass through the Filter Media. Then when conditions exist, these fine particle suspended in solution then coagulate or precipitate out of solution making the above mentioned residues, including the Yellowish Residues we have seen in Carb/Throttle Body Pictures.

    This could be more likely to happen when a New Storage System is put in place as required to be replaced every so many years by the EPA, I believe.

    As far as the Fuel Filters, I don't trust the stuff in Auto Parts Stores if they are not marked properly just what they are supposed to do (if anything at all).

    So I am using these these Glass Fuel Filters a trial, especially with all the Funky Gas w/Ethanol, would be easier to see if there are any problems. Those obscure metal ones made me feel uncomfortable:

    So far with a few thousands of miles they are working well and the replaceable media is just slightly more tan in color.

    Installed a 40171 that I had sitting on the self for a year and a half. Everything went smoothly until we tried to fire up the engine. Nothing. The pump is making clicking noises but you almost have to put your ear up to it to hear it. Is that normal? What's the preferred method of testing the pump?

    We went over everything multiple times but nothing. We took the pump off and directly attached to a battery and only got a very low clicking noise. No vibration coming from the pump at all.

    This seems a bit too obvious, but I'll throw it out there: is it pumping gas? check by draining the float bowls or disconnecting a fuel line between pump and carbs and holding it in a jar while you turn the key. The facet is quieter than the stock pump. You're better off diagnosing by how much gas it's pumping vs. how noisy it is.

    Hi all
    New the KTM clan, just having bought a nice 2004 950 Adventure.
    What a hoot, very impressed so far.
    When I bought it, the bloke had already installed a Facet pump, so I assumed it would be the 40171 as seems to be the norm.
    Well after pulling everything apart, I found that its a Facet Posi-Flo 60104.
    Its plastic bodied and rated at 1.5-4 psi.
    Should I get rid of it and replace with the 40171 or is it ok?
    What worries me the most is the spec sheet rate it as only for use up to 60 degrees C :huh
    It works fine but does make some loud rattling noises sometimes after restart after she gets real hot, maybe vapor lock and running dry for a few seconds????
    Rest of the time seems fine.

    I didn't see a fuel filter. Check valve included. The only thing would worry me is this 60C limitation. If it has been proven, you are good to go.

    Hi and thanks for the reply.
    Yeah, the outlet is sharper than I like.
    I want to add a 45 degree brass elbow to that side.
    The inlet side has the standard metal filters supplied with Facets, same filter as the 40171 by the look of it.
    I think the 40171 is rated at about 75C but not sure.
    Id happily change it if this one is not suitable, just dont want to spend the money if its not needed.

    I post it here as I believe it is the same pump in its basic construction. Served me flawlessly since installation in 2007 for 60k kms. Died yesterday and an updated used OEM with Dr Bean kit replaced it. Let it be remembered...

    I recently Removed my Facet 40171 because from the start, it allowed fuel to bleed through and into the carbs, causing hard starts and tons of white smoke from unburned fuel. This was after sitting for a couple hours or overnight.

    I used Dr. Bean's kit on the stock fuel pump and so far so good.

    I had my facet die on me in the middle of nowhere on a recent trip to Morocco, luckily I was carrying a spare one :thumb the facet had only been fitted for approximately 18 months :scratch.

    First time I've heard of the Dr. Bean thingy. Can anyone point me in the direction so I can find more info please.

    Afraid not Nick, symptoms were the usual spluttering to a halt. Bike would turn over but not fire. When I turned the key the usual clicking sound of the pump priming was replaced with a whirring sound. I took the fuel (outlet) line off and turned the key and no fuel came out. Like I say luckily I had a spare one with me and replaced it within half hour.

    In hindsight I should've brought it home and sent it to guys at parts for aircraft where I bought it from to see if they could shed any light on why it failed.

    Sadly it's somewhere in the Cedar Forest!!

    I'm at about 50,000 miles on my 40171. Still working well at the end of this season.

    I think the biggest thing is to check and clean filters. If you install a FACET filter (I don't, I use a cleanable Pingle, or cheap large plastic moto filter) or any other filter on the INLET SIDE, clean or replace it every 10,000 miles when you do a valve check. I think that running the tank dry, (running the pump dry) or starving for gas over a long period of time can do damage.

    Remember, these are Airplane pumps, I'm pretty sure they are not designed to run Dry.

    The current one in my bike I'll put another 10,000 miles on it and see how it lasts. Then swap in a new one before my next trip out west. That figures out to a whopping $.001 per mile. If I was just running around town all the time. I'd keep it in until it fails, but not when I travel off road. I prefer to swap out parts before they strand me.
