Failed Gaiter on Telelever Ball Joint (2005 R1200GS)

    The rubber gaiter that protects the ball joint connecting the telelever arm (aka "trailing arm") to the lower fork bridge is torn on my 2005 GS. Iitem 10 on this fiche is the complete ball joint including the gaiter:

    The gaiter does not appear to be a separate item & the ball joint costs $117.00. Short of replacing the whole ball joint, has any one figured out a repair for the gaiter?:ear :ear

    Mine failed on my trip this summer, dealer replaced it under warranty. He said the only fix was replacing the entire joint.

    Can't comment on the 1200, but when the gaiter ripped on the ball joint of my 1150, I had to replace the whole thing.

    Mine (1150) ripped too. I tracked-down the manufacturer but they wouldn't supply (couldn't be bothered I suspect).

    I wasn't going to fork-out for a new ball-joint, so I rummaged about and found a ball-joint cover in a waste bin of a car repair garage that was roughly similar.

    The main difference was that the one I found wouldn't take the inset collar. Instead the top neck is a tight fit and I just placed the collar on the top.

    They couldn't sell it to you without getting into a lot of trouble with BMW. The part is most likely proprietary.

    Rescue Tape. I have used it on several. So long as your ball joint is still clean wrap them with rescue tape and is self seals. My friend Kermit has had it on his for 40K miles so far.

    JVB - Funny thing, I was thinking along these lines (rescue tape) also as a last resort. Cut away the old gaiter as much as possible then go for it with the tape?

    A.T. T-W - what type of tool did you use to remove the the spring retainer at the bottom of the gaiter?

    I just leave the original rubber on it unless it is totally disintegrating. Usually it is just torn. Tape over it.

    Good timing, mine is torn as well. Other than looking for dirt inside, is there a good way to tell if the joint is worn and needs replacement? I'm at 37k on my bike, is that getting close to replacement time anyhow?

    If the ball joint is loose you can feel/see it by holding the brake and pushing the bike against it. The ball joint shouldn't move except to allow the swingarm to go up and down. No lateral movement.

    Just a thin-blade screwdriver. The retainer is just like a key-ring, work around the spring-retainer as you would when feeding a key onto a ring.

    Vegasgsa's idea looks like a good "permanent" repair and I'd like to hear how it goes, what size, etc.

    I agree with JVB that the "take apart" looks to be pretty difficult. Haynes shows using a typical suspension tool to separate the telelever from the lower fork bridge. Then there is the matter of the humongous bolt used to mount the ball joint to the bridge.

    For "temporary" repair rescue tape is probably the way to go. One fellow mentioned "super glue" but I can't see this for my situation.

    I used one of these replacement ball-joint gators from Greece, got it before Beemer Bone-yard started carrying them.
    It worked like a charm on my 05 GS and was easy-peasy to install.
    I left the lower lock-ring off to prevent it from tearing again and it stayed snugly in place all on its own.
