Seems like it was only yesterday that 11yr old Jarrett transitioned from being a quadtard to a motorcycle rider.......here he is on his YZ80 out at Glamis in 03'......

Flash forward 7 years.......now he's transitioned from boy to man........from trainee to Airman......he picked up his Airman's Coin at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. this morning......he's off to tech school on Monday to learn how to become an inflight refueler/load master as part of an air crew....

    Time flys.......now he's going flying :D

And then you gotta let them go.

Looks like you done fine, Dad. Only question is, did he take a bike with him?

Thanks for all the kind words.....

I'm sure he wishes he could have a bike with him but his life's belongings are squeezed into a duffle right now......he'll be busy with tech school in TX., OK., WA., and FL. over the course of the next ~5 months.....

He's training to be a boom operator (inflight refueling).....he'll also be trained as a Loadmaster and assist the Navigator......the main objective when he signed up was to "get on the plane!" (we were told only ~4% of the folks who enlist in the Air Force actually "get on the plane").....not an easy job to snag as an 18yr old enlisted Airman.....but he did it thanks to luck of the draw, good test scores, good physical conditioning.....

Inflight Refueling (Boom operator) video: http://www.airforce.com/op<WBR>portunities/enlisted/caree<WBR>rs/general/in-flight-refue<WBR>ling-apprentice/

    Load Master video: http://www.airforce.com/op<WBR>portunities/enlisted/caree<WBR>rs/general/aircraft-loadma<WBR>ster-apprentice/

Once he's finished with Tech School he'll get ~3 weeks off before being assigned to a duty station.........so hopefully we'll be able to schedule a dualsport trip to Bass Lake or (?) while he's home for a few weeks this summer..........

Geez Crawdaddy, that is a story that hits home with more than just me I'm sure.

Yes, you'll miss him but ya know what ...? He'll miss you and remember all the stuff you do too.

    Good on both of you.

    Best,
    Rob

    Chris,
That is great! I am sure that all of that time you spent with your son will continue to pay off in many ways. Congratulations to him!

From a retired AF Crew Chief congrats!! He is going to have the time of his life!! Working a tanker is going to keep him busy and will see the world!! You should get one of those world map and keep track of all the countrys he travels to. (Amazon has the maps cheap! I have a 77x 42 that cost me $42.00)

But when he is home it will make the rides that much more enjoyable. One of my most memorable was riding out to Big Bend with my dad on mid tour leave in 06. That and it was hotter than Iraq I think riding along the Rio Grande on fresh black top. But over all a great trip. It was road bikes then, VTX1300 and Dad on his GL1800. This time I'm taking the Uly for some off road fun. If you son has the chance to get stationed over here, the Black Forest is probably one of the best places on earth for street riding.

    Good idea - Thanks

He's still waiting on orders even though he finished BMT last week......might be due to weather issues at Altus: http://www.altus.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123189447<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>

My youngest boy, left for Basic in August to Ft Benning. Very hard to see him go. We went to his graduation in October, he is now 21, in some ways he is all man. It is breathtaking seeing you child transform from that kid that never did his chores to a man in uniform.
He is now training in Ft Eustis VA for Avionics Mech.

The oldest has been in the AF for 4 years and is now at Barksdale. He is in itel. Also was hard to let go

They are men, but still our kids. I miss doing all the things with them, off roading, camping, car stuff.

I am very proud of my boys, as you are of your son.

I am also very proud of every "child" that serves and has served in our Armed Forces and keeps us FREE:clap

    THANKS

It's hard to believe it's been over 10 years since I started the training pipeline in the Navy...

The next few years will be some great ones. Once he starts deploying, he will have some amazing stories to come home and share with you over a beer.

My son's are 3 and 6... I can't wait till these guys are old enough to join me on the trails.

Your son has picked a great job in the AF, we are truely grateful for those big wing tankers, especially when you're low on fuel and 400 miles from the boat.

I look forward to being one of his customers in the future. Congrats!
