find TDC without cams installed

    this is on a 1190 which has chain driven cams. unlike the cam/chain drive of the 990

    I am trying to reinstall the cams. ALL four were removed to troubleshoot some issues with the shortblock.

    how can I tell if the piston is on the compression stroke near TDC since it only fires every other stroke?

    or does it not matter on the first cylinder as long as piston is at top?

    Ding, Ding, Ding, we have a winner!!!

    The ignition fires on every stroke, so the cams determine if it is on compression or overlap. Do the front one first. Then turn the crank forward (about 3/4 turn) until the rear is on TDC.

    according to manual: Set the rear to TDC and check for the position notch (locking bolt notch) on the crankshaft. If the notch is visible the rear cylinder is at the right mark to put the cams in.
    The markings of the crankshaft and idler gear should line-up as well.
