If you can't find one to borrow, renting will be your only viable option. You won't be able to register or insure a vehicle in your name without a legal residential presence in the country.

Met this guy and his wife on the IoM ferry. Have since heard very good reports on the services offered.

It would probably have to be registered and insured in her name.

You will need an international drivers license, which you can obtain from AAA (easy if you are 23 years of age or older) and an ECE certified helmet.

Obviously, you'll also need a bike. Not very many places rent bikes in Italy. Best bet is large BMW or Harley dealerships.

There are several places in Milan that rent bikes for exactly the type of trip you're wanting. If you like Guzzi's Alice in Mandello di Lario rents them. Google is your friend. If your helmet is DOT certified, you'll be fine as ling as it's not one of those half helmets - those are trouble here. Open face, no problem, full better.

    Buona Fortuna!

I've had an excellent experience renting from Francesco at CIMT, they are in Roma, Milano, etc.

It seems that tagesk has left Italy and went back to DK... according to the thread. He has not updated for a while.

I'm located in Padua (30 kms from Venice) have some (old) bikes but at the moment each one needs repair. Already lended to Advriders without problems.
I got an Yamaha XT350 that could be perfect for you, but the generator is broken (and me too …:cry) , If you could find in the U.S. the part -in Italy XT350 are rather rare, so the chances to find the used spare (new costs more than bike value..) are low- and will to share part of insurance cost …we could make a deal.

Anyway, if you need hints and advices - particularly on Venice (where I spent my youth) or Dolomites that's my heartland, just send me a PM

    Ciao Giorgio,

I live outside of Vicenza. I might have a friend in need of a bike rental. Was your Yamaha ever fixed?

Hello everyone, my name is Roberto, I write from Tuscany. Me and some of my friends, we are building a service about packages one-week vacation to visit Tuscany, including: motorcycle rental, 4 star hotel half board, and a tuscan guide (speaking english) all week, all for € 799 ($ 977 today) for 7 days and 6 guided tours to: Florence, Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano, Chianti, Volterra... . The price is about a quarter of what they ask other agencies, but 2015 will be our first year, and then we make special offers.
We offer a true adventure in Tuscany, not just an holiday.
