I think Ben is just riding Finke for fun. He rode a Beta X trainer in last years Wildwood extreme as well.

If that is the case... then good on him... and good luck to him. Grabbo's "riding for fun" pace will probably see him post a top 30 time in any case. :lol3

I guess I was just hopeful (given his past history at KTM in getting their "desert" program to the next level) that he would bring some of that to his new role at Beta... It would be nice to have another top tier team in the sport at national level in Australia.

    :D
Pretty sure he's riding in the Masters class (35 to 39). I would love to see Beta with a race team in Oz but I don't think the $$$ are there. Shame really as the bikes are competitive (won world enduro E3 two years running).... Better throw in a disclaimer here....I sell Betas so I might be a bit biased.....:-)

Ah, it's a dirt squirt. Was kind of hoping the rr might be a rally replica.

(Not that it'd be a great choice for a finke sprint if it was a replica)

A bit biased? :lol3 (maybe? :D) but not overstated at all I reckon... like I said earlier; a lot of the premium Euro brands like Beta, Sherco, GasGas and TM make really good competition and enduro models... they have all taken World Championship enduro titles in recent years... it's NOT just all KTM and (now) Husqvarna.

Tha is what got me all hot and excited about Grabbo mentioned in conjunction with Beta and the Finke. In my mind - with Ben's background in planning, prepping, pre-running and racing the Finke, I am sure he could use that experience to put together a competitive team (say three rider assault) that would create some real headlines for the brand in Oz. Finke is a big newsworthy deal these days, well promoted, well publicized... huge field of entries. putting a solid Finke campaign together for Beta would come at a fraction of what a full season team effort at the AORC would (like you say - the dollars probably are not there, to fund an effort on that scale)... but a one off shot at the "premier blue ribbon even"... well maybe? :dunno

Probably too late for 2018 (if the plans are not already set in motion?) but I'd have thought that a team headed up by Ben as #3 rider/mentor/pre-running coach... with say, two other young "attack dogs" to sick on the front runners - along with a good support/pit crew effort, would throw a log amongst the pigeons. :lol3

Grabbo against Mark Sladek... that will be a good matchup.
Mark has placed everywhere from 2nd to 15 th ( and a couple of dnfs) and holds the record for the most Finke starts i believe.
Headed up the Husky Simweld team in recent years, won the over 35s in 16...
He's the fastest fatso I know. He still races, whereas Grabbo has been out of it for a while.

I am pretty sure Grabbo has no desire to run a Beta offroad team- I think he mentioned somewhere that he was tired of looking after a bunch of youngsters trying to behave as serious racers- the perfectionist that he is did that for too long @ KTM....
Besides, what would Beta Australia expect to gain from doing just the same as the blue, orange and white
guys without out-spending them? Getting high quality exposure and media attention at selected events, plus connecting with potential customers @ non competitive trail rides might actually sell them more bikes with less marketing budget...

    ^^^^ All excellent points Michael...
You know him fairly well, and as you point out - if he's "burnt out" on the whole racing scene thing... and the budget as you say - does come into play. I guess I was just basing my "rose coloured glasses" scenario on the success/background he has had... and the possibility to bring that to Beta.

The customer ride Days and non-competitive trail rides angle does have a lot of merit... the larger percentage of enduro bikes sold in Oz (I would imagine) go to the enthusiast/clubman level rider... than the hard core competition set... so that "hands on" approach, with a legend like Ben at the helm - could go a long way into translating into sales.

I'd still personally love to see him put a Beta RR-lite together and have a crack at the Sunraysia Safari though... his speed and navigation would still have him near or at the front I reckon.

Any groups crossing the Simpson after the race and happy to add one more? My usual suspects are unable to attend so I'm in need of company as a safety measure. I'll be trekking solo to Finke and plan on taking the French line to Birdsville thereafter.

Betamotor Italy appoints Lowry Australia as new Australian Distributor
Lowry Australia is to become the new exclusive Australian Importer and distributor for Beta Motorcycles. The appointment includes both Enduro and Trials motorcycles made by the Italian manufacturer and will take full effect on the 28th of May 2018.

Lowry Australia is a small family owned business based on the Gold Coast (QLD) and is currently also the Australian importer and distributor of YCF Motorcycles with a comprehensive network of dealers nationwide. Prior to starting Lowry Australia in 2014, Managing Director Patrick Lowry played a key role in the distribution of Husqvarna Motorcycles in Australia from 2004-2014.

Further to this existing Beta Product manager Ben Grabham will remain in the role moving forward with Lowry Australia and will also be competing in selected race events representing the brand this year including Finke and Hattah.

Looks like Grabbo is taking his racing pretty serious again- reliable sources tell me that he recently spent a day on the dyno tweaking his Finke 480RR for substantially more middle- and top range power; and then headed to Alice for some extensive suspension testing.
I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up with a top 20 plate this year....

I dropped into the suspension shop responsible for tuning Grabbo's Beta yesterday to pick up my bike.
Apparently the 480RR didn't need much dialling in to get the suspension right.
If anyone's keen on a low hrs used 480RR Chris Vermuellen has traded his in at the shop. Has a long range tank on it too.
