I was going to meet friends for breakfast. The weather here in Florida was mild, traffic was light and I was feeling good. I was riding a stretch less than a mile from my house that I had ridden thousands of times before. Suddenly, from out of nowhere, a young buck was in front of me. I saw him for less than a half of a second and had no time to react. The next thing I remember was getting into the ambulance. I have no idea of how I hit, how far I slid or any other details of the accident. My new WCGS was trashed. Likely totaled. Now the good news. Other than a few abrasions on my knees and hands and very sore left shoulder, I am in tact. My helmet was completely trashed. Deep gouges all the way around. My SIDI boots have holes all the way through to the lining in the toes where I apparently slid on the pavement. I was riding the speed limit of 55 when I hit. I killed the deer. The one thing I keep thinking about is the quality of the gear I was wearing. Shoei full face helmet, SIDI riding boots, KLIM riding suit and they all did their job. It gives new meaning to the term ATGATT and I now appreciate the quality of really good gear. I remember thinking about how expensive the KLIM suit and the new helmet were when I recently bought them, but the only thing I think about now is the level of protection they provided. Ride safe and be prepared.
