yup...from back in the day when Bob Hannah was my idol..
I think I've had that chest protector for something like 35 years now....I get a lot of ribbing from the guys at the track on my old stuff...

Mel, I believe if all available farkles and mods were added to a KLR it may not make it across town, let alone across the country.

Keep it simple, keep it safe! (Secure the load)
    Have fun!!!!

Yeah when you first posted that, I actually printed it out and put it in my planning folder :)

I relinked the list 3 posts up but here it is

In addition to the doo and valve shims:
    - Pull and clean oil screen (under clutch cover) if you haven't done it already.
    - Idle mixture adjustment cap removal if not already accomplished.
    - Sub-frame bolt replacement if not already done.
    - Swing-arm and uni-track bearings and bolts - grease if not done recently.
    - Carb vent T mod.
    - Uni air filter if stock filter is deteriorated. (Nice to carry a spare clean one on long trips and they compress well in a Ziploc bag.)
    - Snorkel mod.
    - Wiring check for rub spots.
    - Check all frame bolts for condition and torque, plus blue locktite where necessary.

    Optional but recommended:
    - Install an upgrade kit for the headlight harness or install good driving lights
    - Install an LED rear brake-light. (Flashes three times before going solid and is much brighter than stock.)
    - Heated grips.
    - Install wiring for GPS and heated gear.
    - Cigarette lighter socket (for charging USB devices and running air pumps etc...)
    - Run another clutch cable beside existing cable and fasten in place.
    - Mod seat to make it wider. (Probably not necessary for you Mel, likely want to make it shorter...)

Agree with Greg, don't overthink it. You'll find the things that fail will be the doo-dads and what-nots you attach to the bike, not the bike itself... Make sure the bike is in order and will get you home. chain, sprockets, tires, address leaks and noises.

Although farkelizing is addictive...just ask my VISA and my mailman since I got re-employed :lol3:eek1

Not just the farkles either, it's all the backup stuff you think you might need, sprockets, brake pads, chain, etc., if you start with everything new, you shouldn't have a problem and will ride a lot lighter. Unless your doing some strickly offroad gnarly adventure from Deadhorse to Argentina, you shouldn't need it. I had everything including the kitchen sink when I did some week long ventures on my KLR and I might as well been riding a GSA...it felt that heavy :huh

Like BackRoader said, "Keep it simple"...I think the "Secure the load" statement was from previous experience :lol3

That's some good advice. I've had to cross numerous things off my bike to-do list because I didn't need them. my bank account will like that. The area I won't skimp out on however is rider gear.

Just buy yourself a full suit of medieval armour and you should do fine. I have a one piece 'stitch. One zipper on and of, and you're covered neck to ankles to wrists.

Well, I would most certainly be in if it were early - say 11:30...I have to be at the airport around 4 pm to fly to Vancouver that day...but I would certainly enjoy a get-together once again, having missed the last one...

I may be into going but it would be either Friday or Saturday evening as I'm working days over that time period.
