battery has a tendency when it gets too discharged to not charge.

I fixed a battery using above, it was displaying the "battery missing error".

It could also be something other than this :D

    I have a 478 with CN 2010.4 I use Basecamp on a MacBook Pro.

When I'm out for a ride and I want to down load the track to the computer I have 10 or more "Active Log" with anywhere from 1 to several hundred points. How do you get it to make just 1 Active log or track?

I can't see any pattern to this.

Also on the 478 in the Tracks page there is "Record Mode" with OFF, Fill and Wrap as choices. What do these do?

Then in the" Interval" choice there is Distance, Time and Resolution. What is the Resolution ?

Anytime you power off the 478 or it loses sats and you get the message GPS sats lost, it starts a new track log. So if you want one continuous log, just don't turn it off and never ride in the woods and it will always be continuous. :lol3

In all seriousness though, even if it does break them up when something like that happens, when you import it into MapSource (or Basecamp I would assume would be the same, although I haven't used it), you can join all those track logs together and create one continuous log. Highlight all the track logs, right click and choose join. Sometimes that doesn't work, so you can open up one of the track logs, do a Crl+A to highlight all the points, copy them, and then paste all those points in the next track log. Just make sure to keep them in order.

In the record mode. Off is like it says, track recording is off. Fill means it will fill the active log until it fills up its 10k point active log, then stop and warn you its full. Wrap means that once its fills up, it start over writing the beginning of the track log and continually overwrites the beginning as you add more.

For interval, distance and time are self explanatory. I'm sort of guessing on this one, but I think resolution is sort of an auto mode meaning it adjusts the track logging by your time & distance and what resolution you want it to appear accurate at?

I believe that the latest map that 478 can hold is the 2009. Somebody will correct me if I am wrong...

The latest version of the maps will not fit due to memory limitations BUT you can install as much as possible to internal memory and then install the balance to a memory card. The 478 will then "see" the entire map from the two locations. Or at least that is what I did. It does require that you have one of the Garmin stupid expensive:puke1 memory cards and the programmer for it.

My 478 has the 2009 on it's internal memory. So if I buy a map update are you saying that it will not overwrite the existing 2009 maps, but will install the new maps on the rest of what is left of the internal memory? (that should not be much...and then the rest will go into those stupid expensive data cards?:dunno of which only a 512MB max is available:baldy. The whole set of NA maps would be a bit more than a GB...

Then this becomes like a 276c then...a downgrade if you want to have the new maps:ear, but atleast an option as I thought the 2009 maps was the end of the map updates for 478...

Nope - the install will overwrite what is on internal memory in the 478 (install as much as possible) then the balance goes on the memory card. It's a bit of a PITA but it works. When the 478 came out years ago I expect no one anticipated the maps would consume so much more memory. More data = more memory. So far it all fits but I expect someday even the memory card trick won't work!:eek1

Somewhere, it might even be in this thread, there's an explanation of a command line option for the Windows installer that allows the full map set to be installed in internal memory. I've not tried it, and I don't really understand it, but I think it forces an overwrite of the partition containing the Coastal Waterways data. If I ever have access to a Windows machine again I'.m tempted to try it out.

So I know this is a dumb question, but here goes.

I got a refurbished 478 back from Garmin a couple months back and am now trying to update my maps. I have Garmin City Navigator NA NT 2013.1 downloaded completely to my hard drive. I understand that the entire map set will not transfer in full to my 478.

When I open MapInstall it shows that my current mapset 2010.10 All is 6kb over the internal memory limit - I have no idea why it would allow an over install previously that Garmin sent me. When I choose just a single map from the 2013 to update it does not allow me to even though it's just an update.

When I try the same proceedure in MapSource it too tells me that I can't update due to lack of memory.

Any ideas? I'm guessing I need to just wipe the unit they sent me clean and then I can add maps. If that is what's required how to you wipe the maps off? I see how to get ride of tracks, routes, and waypoints, just not the maps.

    Thanks.

Quick call to Garmin and the answer is ........ drumroll please.

After you log into account at MyGarmin and you get to screen to download the updated maps there are 2 options. The top one is what the website recommends however for the 478 they suggest using the 2nd option. This will start a download of GarminMapUpdater_vXXX.exe. Run the program. When you get to the option to install maps choose an area that fits (City Nav 2013.10 the entire 49 states fit) and use the 2nd option where it installs both your computer and device. This will take time. When it installs to your computer you'll get the ALL the maps even though only the 49 states are going to your device. After everything is complete you can use MapSource or MapInstall to choose more specifically which map sections you want on your device or not.

    Hmmm.

May be worth updating maps now. My 478 refuses to die, after all. :D

    Lobby,
I would if I were you. I have a 478 and the procedure described works just fine. Load what you can to the internal memory, then if you have a card programmer and memory card you can get all the rest on a 512MB memory card. Eventually that will probably be too small and we'll be out of luck but for now it works. I can get 49 states into internal memory as I recall, then Canada and Mexico on the 512MB memory card. Someday I'll have to trade up, but not yet.

Have any of you 478 guy's and gal's been able to fix the USB connection in the GPS, I do not know why but I am on my 2nd 478 that has lost the USB connection internally. The second one gave up shortly after the warranty expired.

I have tested the cable on my 276c so I know the cable is O.K.

Today is a rainy day, maybe I will take the unit apart and see if it has a broken solder joint at the connector.
