Think twice before clicking that button!

Integration of Basecamp with Google Earth has been removed. Right mouse click on a track and you no longer get the "View in Google Earth" option.

    Here's the old menu choice

Maybe not a deal breaker for some, but an added hassle to export as KML and then import to Google Earth. Why Garmin, why? Updates should add features, not remove them.

Is 4.7 a 64-bit program? The current version is 32-bit and Apple will stop supporting 32-bit apps in a future OS release. Perhaps 4.7 is preparing for that future OS release and it was too hard to integrate the Google linkage? Or, Garmin & Google are having a corporate spat?

Or Garmin got sick of dealing with support requests when Google changed the name of the app to Google Earth Pro which caused all kinds of chaos for people that used the "View In Google Earth" feature. :dunno

Hopefully it is just a mistake and they will add it back with a new update. I am holding off updating as long as I can or until this feature is put back. Not something I need but I do on occasion export to google earth and have a look at my route there which is nice.

As for the Google Earth Pro issue, it is easily solved (at least on a mac) by renaming the application Google Earth. Have zero issues with it myself right now. Not sure how it would work on Windows.

In the Apple app store this is what it says is "improved" with this update:

Well, hell, I didn't see this thread and I clicked on the "upgrade" for my Macbook Pro. I used the Google Earth View feature all the time. Can I kill BaseCamp 4.7.0 and reinstall 4.6.0? I still have the older version of BaseCamp on my Macbook Air and that's my travel computer.

always always always backup Application-Name by making a duplicate, then uploading to a cloud server..... before installing an update.

remember Windows ME ? yup, fool me once shame on you...

    You are absolutely correct!

I back up both of my Macs every weekend. I was able to go to last week's back-up, find BaseCamp v 4.6.3 in Applications and dragged/dropped it to my desktop. It opens and functions just fine.

WHY? is probably related to Google's recent price increase for use of their Maps API.

I successfully reverted back to 4.6.2 using the link above. No issues, all my routes are present and functional. I'll stick with that for now.

I just got version 4.6.3. for OSX here

What a shame that the only useful feature for route design on that appalling software has been removed. Hanging on legacy versions isn't a long term solution, so maybe it's time to start looking into alternatives for navigation software and hardware. Especially for cycling, I'm finding an Android phone far superior to handheld GPS units.

Both have very long threads here on ADV Rider. Both have learning curves, but they're very powerful.

I haven't upgraded Basecamp since it required the use of Windows Media Player, which I won't use. Not being a big fan or user of Basecamp, I don't know how much I've missed by not updating, though.

I wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with Google Map's surprise broadside. I guess they're taking their cue from Photobucket...Set 'em up, then knock 'em down. :umph

Garmin really isn't using Googles maps though, just exporting a route that Google Earth can see so not sure why they would get dinged with the Google maps price increase.

Not sure if this work around will work with the updated version of BaseCamp as I have not installed it but you can export your route as a KML file from BaseCamp and open that in Google Earth manually. Not as simple as the right click and view in Google Earth but it should still give you the route to view in Google Earth.

Select the route you made. Now go to File>Export Selected user data. New window opens. For file format at the bottom select KML, save to a folder you want. Now open Google Earth, go File>open and select the file you just saved.

    This done on a Mac.

Yes, with the new update you can still easily export and then view in Google Earth ... but I'll stick with the older version as long as I can. In rally routing, being able to view a waypoint or bonus location with GEs view right in BaseCamp is really valuable.

I plan to stick with the older Basecamp until well after Garmin fixes this issue. I still use Mapsource a lot. And it went obsolete well over 5 years ago.

I often make iterative route, track, and waypoint changes in Mapsource and Basecamp and want to see quickly in GE what the effect is.

I am in no hurry to update BaseCamp and will just keep the version I have till Garmin does something that makes me want to update. There are no new features I need or want in the update.
