Any linux users out there using a Zumo? What tools are you using for mapping and interacting with the GPS?

I have a Garmin eTrex and the Ubuntu version of Linux. I can get the MapSource software to install through WINE o.k. & you can create routes but it won't recognise the GPS do upload. I now use the pre-loaded software memory cards so it has not been an issue. If anyone does have the full solution, I would also be interested.

Right now, run MapSource on the free Windows 7 RC inside a VMware Server virtual machine. I do this on my Mac to run MapSource to interface to my eTrex Vista. I am using a USB-serial dongle though, so that might circumvent any problems you're having with the serial port.

Then you'll have to pick a Garmin supported OS...

I need the ability to load maps on my Garmin and none of the Linux software supports that, so I need MapSource or RoadTrip.

It should be possible to find something that will load and save waypoints and routes.

Sucks to be you, it seems.

Have you tried running Mapsource under J Ubuntu Wine? I know Webupdater works on my Zumo with J64.

I found a few apps in the portage tree for Gentoo. qlandkartegt looked the most promising from the summary.

Gpsdrive looks to be the linux equivalent of streets and trips.

QLandkarte can be found here. This one is new to me. Screenshots are impressive as well...

    Hi,
    Complain to Garmin :lol2

I have set up a VirtualBox with Windows XP to run MapSource. The GPS (GPSmap 60CS) connects through the USB port and is recognised by MapSource inside the virtual machine, so I don't have any communication issue.

Check out this thread. I'm running Ubuntu, but have only had my Zumo 660 for a short while, so not a lot of time to experiment yet.

If you go the VM route what is the smallest size XP that you can install. My netbook has a small hard drive (4gig).
