I have an old (2009) garmin nuvi 255w that I plan on using for my NEPA north east Pennsylvanian to Panama City ride. Are there any maps, upgrades whatsoever available. This gps stops at Brownsvile TX.

    Thanks

Not familiar with your unit, but if City Navigator North America can be installed it covers all the US very well, Mexico pretty well, and Central America kind of OK.

The weak point of any nuvi is the mini usb connector at the back of the gps. Vibration will loosen the usb from the circuit board.
I found a short mini usb extension, and glued the extension cable to the back of the gps, so it isn't able to move or vibrate at all. The female end sticks out the bottom so the power cable is able to connect to it. I've used it for more than 10,000 miles and it's holding up well.
I also manufactured a home built shade (kinda like a tunnel, if you will) so it's a lot easier to see in the sun.
I think these units originally came only with USA and Canada loaded on them, so you'll have to purchase all of N America City Navigator which includes Mexico, or find map(s) that you can put on an SD card for Mexico.

Thanks for suggestions, I'll look into it. I have already upgraded the maps with open street maps to cover Central America.
