No responses on the forum yet but Garmin support tells me that they've discontinued support for this feature on the 2597. And they're trying to tell me it never worked.

I can't believe it. The guy didn't even know what I was talking about initially.

Is the app on the Nav V called Tracking or Live Tracking? There seems to be a difference. My 2597's app is called Tracking.

I have not located such a forum on Garmin's support pages either. If anyone has a suggestion of where we should all post our observations/questions that would be great.

    I'm calling Garmin again.

I found this page which lists my 2597 as on the compatibility list for the live tracking feature.

Now they tell me that a software update to the Apple iOs is causing a problem. I have an Android here I can use to test.

    Nope, no better.

Well apparently the engineers now know there's a problem, and are working on it.

Good to hear Garmin engineers jumped right on this once their customers informed them their product doesn't work. Good Lord.

They would argue that something happened that was outside their control, probably.

Maybe so - but it is within the Garmin website it seems. I tried three different browsers I think - all of them blank.

I agree. Maybe it's a change to the map they're relying on to display the page, Bing or whatever. The eTrex Touch tracking page works right now, but it's a different page.

that's pretty normal for an in-house website problem. they probably are relying on a third party to do the map images instead of using their own, so when google/bing/whoever changes things, it breaks their in-house applications that rely on it. fixes in great developer circles are overnight, in poorer developer circles take longer. it's probably not a priority, given how few people use live tracking services, but you can believe if the portal that is used for buying new handhelds goes down, it'll be fixed in a hurry ;-)

If you are carrying a phone anyway, I suggest you just use one of the tracker apps available for phones. For live tracking on IOS , that lets folk you nominate see progress on the web, I recommend https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/raah-tracker/id525298475?mt=8. For Android there is https://locatoweb.com/

I like the IOS app better, it has some excellent features such as a stop analysis whereby you can see where you stopped for more than X minutes - X being user selectable. Both of these use very little battery and if out of cell coverage, they will upload everything as soon as you get back into range.

I don’t understand why Garmin is always behind the curve on this. I would think that Apple gives them beta releases before the actual release. Then they can test, I can understand a problem on occasion, but it seems they are always dealing with this.

The blank browser page lists 2 apps for mobile use
Neither of the apps are on the App Store
I am presuming they have dropped the feature?

Thanks for that but the issue is the Garmin tracker, not a third party product. It used to work... why doesn’t it now.
If they don’t want you to use it they should withdraw it or fix it

It's not an Apple issue. Garmin did tell me that but the support people can be clueless. I called three times and got three different opinions, none of which I believed.

The only thing I heard which I think was believable was that it had been sent to their technical staff to investigate. I can't accept that they'd allow it to just stop working like that.

I don't try to use all the apps and stuff....too complicated and too distracting from my ride.

I have a new base model Garmin inReach. I only pay about $12 a month for their basic plan. I don't use auto-tracking. Garmin wants a lot of money for the other plans that send out your location...but....every pre-set message (unlimited even with the cheapest plan) also shows your location.

I set up a preset message for folks on my email list. Every now and then when I'm riding along, I simply reach up and tap the "send a preset message button". It sends out my preset message ("I'm ok and having fun, here's where I am") and also sends out my location that interfaces perfectly with my Spotwalla page. I usually let folks on my email list and Spotwalla followers know where I am mid-morning, where I stop for lunch, another mid-afternoon, then where I stop for the night.

I get 10 text included each month in the plan but never use them. I only use the unit for emergency situations (not any so far). Simple, easy, and inexpensive.

Got this from Garmin today, in response to the Helpdesk calls I made:

    "Hello,

Smartphone Link version 2.7.2 was released today, 2/20/18, to correct issues you have been experiencing with Smartphone Link not staying active in iOS 11. Please download the newest version of Smartphone Link through the App Store, then reboot your phone to resolve the issue. You may also ensure you are on the latest version of iOS.

After going through these steps, please confirm that the update did resolve the issue for you, or if you are still experiencing any issues.

    Thank you for choosing Garmin,"

I have downloaded the new version but haven't had time to try it out yet. Will do so tomorrow.

Yeah, I saw that too. I've downloaded it etc. It works. However, for some strange reason it has started working about a week ago all on its very little old own - after Garmin replaced my Navigator VI under warranty for "flickering screen" issues. I hope it is stable going forward and does at least the minimal things the SmartLink app offers.

Now if they could only fix the newly advertised wonderful "Find Me" feature...

@Hercus you say the Tracker App works for you(?). Can you tell me where you got the Garmin Tracker App for either iOS or Android? And, once your invited "Follow Me" email was sent, was the recipient able to access the myGarmin Map?

Tracker is not an app. It's something that's included on certain gps units like the Nuvi 2597. With it, you send out invitations via email. Those invitations include a web link which works in any browser.

Garmin does mention Tracker apps on the invitation page, but the links haven't worked for quite a while now.

Hi @Emmbeedee, I'm aware what Tracker is - and isn't. Have you used the current NAV6 Tracker App? If you have, you will recognize this email which is what your Follower receives in order to 'Track' you. The Follow Me link does not work and there are no Mobile Apps that are accessable - in North America at least.

I've never gotten the "Follow Me" link to either generate the map on the MyGarmin page or show the location if the map did come up. I've even had Garmin send me to a beta-webpage test site and it still wouldn't show the Follow Me location.
