Has anyone made it from Georgia/ Russian at kazbegi yet to see if it open for EU passports???
It seems that is open! http://soviettruck.com/forums/topic/russia-georgia-border-crossing-open/
Additionally i read yesterday on a Greek news paper that the relations between the two countries is getting better and they have mutually decided to improve (or repair??) their diplomatic relations!!!!!
it looks like it's open now, but things may change, and fast, for example if there's an attack against Iran. Georgian government may allow americans base on their territory, and Russians won't like it. This could be a reason.
But let's cross fingers! We'll be there around the 20th of may. I'll keep you posted.

Great! Thanks Aris
Interesting news about Ferry from Sochi to Trabzon:
For anybody that wants to have a "b-plan"!
Duplicate with the above due to mod's approval process!
For those that are having the ferry boat as "plan-B", have in mind that Sochi harbor is closed! The new ferry line is between Adler and Trabzon.
That offroad route over the mountains, can you take a google maps screenshot? i cant pinpoint it.

What about International Motor Insurance Card ?
I see on my card that Georgia, Armenia and Azerbajdan are not listed. Do we have to pay any insurance at the border? Or maybee to get some kind of insurance before entering Georgia?
What about driving licence. Is EU country driving licence enough or do we have to obtain international driving licence?
Normally EU insurance cards don't cover GEO, ARM and AZB. At least for GEO and ARM you can get it at the border.
The same goes for driving licence, the international one is needed.
I bet that even Russia is not listed. My information is that you must pay for it at the border as well!
2 sell insurance at the border (armenia & Azer) georgia didnt require it, in fact I dont think it is even available, as when I asked about it, I just got funny looks.
No need for international license, I just used my US one in all 3 places. I do carry an IDL tho, but Im never asked for it.
Azeri cops (the carload I met) seemed to like to try to make up an infraction & hold your DL until you go to a town & pay a 100 usd fine, returning with the receipt, and get your license back.
Of course they dont WANT you to go pay in town, as then they get no money. Argue with them, waste their time, tell them you are broke.
I had a 5.00 bill in my wallet, & finally gave that too em, got my DL back & hit the road.
I just look at it as a game, & have fun with it.
Has anyone [none CIS] made it across the border yet from Georgia to Russia at Kasbegi??
The time is getting nearer and dont really feel like riding back to Trabzon and getting the ferry.
When will you be there?
The belgian consul in Tbilissi told me 2 weeks ago that it was open for the moment. The french consul told me it was closed.
I'll try to cross the border around the 25th of may. If it's not too late, I can call you and tell you about the situation (send me your number via personal message). But if you get there before me, I'm also interested in hearing from you
I will attempt bordering Kazbegi in mid-June. So, please dont forget to keep us posted here, as well. Thanks!
Thank you everyone for the info so far.
How about Abkhazia? Is the area of limits? Is it posible even to enter the region/country?
I read somewhere it is posible to enter from Russian side, but not to cross border with Georgia...
