A little while back, upon discovering the WA State DNR's excellent trail map for Capitol Forest OHV, I started using and obsessing about GPS enabled (a.k.a. Georeferenced, a.k.a. Geospatial) PDFs... because they're awesome!

So I downloaded maps from every nearby OHV park that I could find, and GPS-ified them. And now we have contributors! Thanks squig!

The phone app that runs these is called Avenza PDF Maps (available at the Apple Apps Store and at Google Play, or via their webpage, here: http://www.pdf-maps.com/get-pdf-maps).

If anyone wants to give the OHV maps a try, they're available here:

Dropbox - PDFs that were georeferenced by me

    Google Drive

NEW LINK: The following is a link to an archive of GeoPDFs that I didn't have any hand in making, but have collected and consolidated for your convenience:

Dropbox - PDFs that were georeferenced by someone else

Note that the Avenza app is designed to use Dropbox.

These are the maps posted so far:

If anyone wants others, just let me know, and I'll build em.

Oh, and if you notice that one (or more) of them isn't anywhere near accurate, and you happened to record a GPS track of your ride, shoot it over to me and I'll try to fix it.

As far as I can tell, all of these maps are in the public domain, and this is thus legit. Let me know if I got it wrong. I don't want The Man comin' after me.:D

It looks like the android version of app was beta for a while, no longer available. Maybe a release will be available soon.

Looks like there's another app, called TerraGo, that might work for Android.

Okay, I uploaded Walker Valley and Mad River. The Mad River map was a nicely made PDF, but not so accurate. If you give it a go, let me know how it works out. If you feel like recording a gps track of your rides, I might be able to use that to make it more accurate.

    Enjoy!

Thanks! If all goes as planned I'm heading out there on Sunday. I'll let you know how it went and send you the track log.
How exactly are you putting these together? Do you just match features to coordinates in the app?

In Acrobat 9, I just eyeball it, finding intersections or geographic features that look accurate compared to the openstreetmap database, and then tag them with coordinates. In Acrobat, you're limited to four GPS points, for getting the georeferencing right. In Acrobat 9, to add georeferencing, the menu choice is Tools/Analysis/Geospatial Registration Tool. The process is really straightforward, and when you finish tagging your points, the coordinate system to choose (or the one I choose, anyway) is WGS 1984 UTM Zone 10N. The Chelan area is on the east edge of Zone 10N, so Zone 11N might also work.

I've also made maps in ArcMap, where the tagging process will warp the map until it becomes more geographically accurate. In ArcMap, you can use as many GPS points as necessary, to get the map to jibe with reality. The arcmap versions take a hit, though, in terms of image quality, when they get uploaded to your phone. There may be some ArcMap gurus out there who can get around this, but I haven't found em yet.

Update: Avenza just released an official version for Android, and it should be available on Google Play now.

I tried to open the TSF and the Nestucca docs in both Avenza and TerraGo. Both apps tell me they can't open the documents.

Lucknau, thanks for doing this, I like the idea.

I downloaded the PDF Maps app for android and imported the maps. The newer Tillamook State Forest map works great. But on the other maps, I get this error when I open them.

"Georeferencing on this map cannot be read. Functions that require coordinates are disabled."

It will still open the map, but the "Find me on the map" type functions don't work. Any suggestions? I'm wondering if when you created these if there was a different export option or something you did on the TSF that allows it to work? All the maps seem to have the Geospacial information when I pull them into Acrobat 9 on my computer, so it's somethign to do with the format/use/configuration on Android devices I'm guessing.

FWIW - I also tried the "TerraGo" software for android, but on all the maps when I try to import them I get "<MAPNAME><XXX map> is not a genuine Terrago GeoPDF. Terrago Mobile can only open genuine GeoPDF's."

I'll work on it. Not having any issues on my iPhone. Scott, does the McCubbins Gulch PDF work for you? I stripped all the metadata out of the Tillamook SF 2013 version before making it, and the McCubbins Gulch one, too. If McCubbins works for you, then I'll fix the rest and repost. Loud Al, if you're up for it and you want to PM me your email address, I'll send you some revisions to try out, till we can get it working.

I get the same error for McGubbins also. I did redownload just now to make sure I had your most current one. It opens the map in the "PDF maps" program but still give this error "Georeferncing on this map cannot be read. Functions that require coordinates are disabled". Only the newer TSF one seems to work for me.

    Thanks for checking into it.

Dang... Wish I knew the first thing about Android. I did read that Avenza needs Android v4.0. Scott and Loud Al, I emailed you a couple of PDFs. Maybe Google Drive is messing them up... I'm guessing probably not though, since I'm able to download from there and have functionality. Wish I knew the difference between how the Tillamook and McCubbins PDFs were made. I'm kind of OCD about method, and I made them within a few minutes of each other.

Running Android 4.1.2. Tried the emailed files - same error. Stupid Android. Seems there are a couple file formats is that an option? Pretty clueless on this topic though - happy to test though.
