Thanks for the fire station pic back aways!
That Polar/Sasquatch is pretty cool, but now they'll probably make WABDR off limits because uf the endangered species act :lol3

That "near miss" wasn't at the end for me...

    My 640...

It was right in the middle cause I was involved. Sure glad we were both on the wrong side....I told my brother the same thing 5 minutes later when I found him at the bottom of the jungle (he missed the turn at the top and had ridden the road to the bottom) Great to read all your ride reports...Stay right except to pass? What fun is that? :freaky

    Glad to NOT meet you...:eek1

    ^ ^ ^ ^ That's awesome!

More zoom on the bear! May be a Spirit Bear?

    Hi, Brokein2!
Your bike is so distinctive, I was wondering if someone would recognize it!

Yeah, glad we didn't RUN into you on the trail...

Do you think you could have stopped?
Saw your dust in the video and it looked like you were on the brakes...
We had too much momentum, Matt said we couldn't have stopped.
    Close one.
    :knary

That was one of the very few times we've been on the wrong side of the road.
When we had that close call on the Magruder, we were on the right side, the other KTM 990 was on the wrong side...

Well, aside from that, hope you and your brother had a good ride!
    Thanks for posting! :eek1
    Watch out for those KTMs....

When we were looking at the photos, Matt said, "oh, it's that bear from Lost..."

    <iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/jHsC5NB6tWg?rel=0" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" width="480"></iframe>

    :lol3

But, really. It looked like a bear when it was running down the cliff, but I'm sure it's a mountain goat.
    A big one.

They're really muscular and stout. And, native to Washington state.

Photo from an article about a mountain goat killing a hiker in Olympia, WA.

hobbes, I tried to zoom in more, but there's no more info available. :cry It's only a crappy point and shoot!

OK, you guys - I'm uploading pics for Day 45...
I hope to have something ready tonight.

No chance of stopping ( I got on the brakes just in case) I am glad we all have enough miles under our belts to stay in control in those little panic moments. That too was one of the only times for me in the other lane....there was a lot of traffic out that week on the WABDR and I was hoping most of us were trying to ride the "correct" track.

I have stopped by meeting people on the trail before but it usually involves paramedics and I thought it best to just enjoy the trip with the other KTM riders like you two. Thanks for keeping me honest...:clap

    Yep. :nod
(The guy on the Magruder freaked out and almost lost control of his bike...)

    All's well that ends well...
    :D

    Day 45: 8/5/12
Wilson Creek to Horseshoe Lake Campground 195 miles

Today we finished up Section 3, did all of Section 2 and a little of Section 1.
I tried to put pink dots to indicate our campsites.
They’re a little off, but close enough.

WABDR Section 2 video - here.

We got another late start today. :rolleyes
Matt’s air mattress had been losing air during the night.
Since there was water nearby, he took some time to try and find the leak.
It was near the valve. My fault for over-zealous tightening. Oops. :shog

It was after 10 by the time we got going.
The morning was pretty and we weren’t in a hurry, so we went back up to Lion’s Rock to take a couple photos.
Mt. Adams on the left and
    Mt. Rainier on the right.

    Mt. Rainier.

    Went to Ellensburg.
At least the trail goes right through town so we couldn’t miss it. :lol3
It was a Sunday, but we tried to find a bike shop anyway.
This MT21 was wearing out FAST.
Matt thought if we could find a shop, we might find some old (used) tires by a dumpster.
Maybe we could "trade" for one that was better than ours...
    :dunno

    There was Yamaha Jack’s...

Wow, never seen such a neat and tidy shop area.
No old tires anywhere. What the hell? :bluduh

As we were leaving town, we saw a KTM sign from the highway and made a quick U-turn.
When we tried to find the shop, it was locked up like Fort Knox.

    Crap.

    :(:

We went around this sign. We wanted that left right there...

Oh, we could use some color to spice up today's photo selection...
    Have some green...

    Into the dirt...

I think there was a creek crossing after this, but I didn't get a photo...

    Hmmm. Not much happening here.
Oh yeah, looking at this photo reminds me - it was hot that day.

    Really hot. :knary

    Radio tower thingies.

I guess this is going up to Umtanum Ridge...

I wasn't even sure I had a photo of this rocky section, but I do. :D

And, look! We even have video.
It's not very exciting, but watch it anyway. This is where everybody always crashes. :deal
    (is that enough incentive? :lol3)
HD if you want to see the rocks...

    <iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/0KTmw0SOfHg?rel=0" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="480" width="853"></iframe>

According to my journal, we had a bunch of near-washouts today.
I wrote, "our tires are trying to kill us."
I guess I was a little nervous. :uhoh

But, so far - no crashes or get-offs. :D
    Whew.

Hey, after talking about that near miss, does anyone else have MacGruber! The guy's a frickin' genius. MacGruber!
stuck in his/her head again? No? Just me?
    Oh.

    :lol3

    Glad you're busy riding, redog1!
    :thumb

    hey Bob, what's up? :wave

:nod A polar bear/grizzly hybrid/spirit bear would have been awesome,
but a giant Mountain goat was pretty neat, too.

We did see an actual bear later on (oregon), but he was too fast and I didn't even get a blurry pic. :cry

Thanks, utefan! that was really sweet of you to say! :shog
I'm so glad that you're enjoying the report.
It feels like it's dragging a little, but I'm happy some of you guys are still reading.

    :freaky

    All right you guys...
    The WABDR isn't super hardcore...
But, what's up with the video watching? 5 lousy views for the Umtanum Ridge video??
And I know at least 1 of those was me, checking the quality...

    :ddog

That rocky stuff is rumored to be the most difficult part of the WABDR.
The hill is where everyone crashes, right?
I thought that was one of the highlights of the trail...

    :dunno

I was about to work on a short video for the next section, but I think I'll do screen shots instead.
And, Bethel Ridge? I'm on the fence about that one. Sigh.
    Maybe no more video?
It's a huge pain in the ass anyway.

OK, I'm going to stop iMovie and work on screen shots instead.
    I'll be back...

You can (not)watch some MegaForce while I'm gone. :rolleyes

    Hi Cannonshot!
    Thanks for stopping by. :D
Sorry about all the lousy, blurry maps...

Hmm. OK, you may have a point. :hmmmmm

I went back and fixed that.
The video still isn't very exciting, but just watch it, ok?

    Kelly and Matt -

Still catching up with your ride report and really enjoying it! I was just watching your videos in Black Dragon Wash and was wondering how you can do that two up without mangling (is that a word even?) your front rim? I don't get it! I put an Excel rim on my 990 about a year ago and I already have a couple of nice dents in it, even though I typically don't air down at all (about 32psi). And I ride solo. What are you using for the front rim?

PS You may not remember me, but we met on one of the Berryessa/Rayhouse Road rides this past spring. I was on a 2011 990R.

Looking forward to the rest of the RR.

:wave I just watched it. I like all your vids. They really add to the RR.

Isn't Lion's Rock neat/pretty. I used to head up there all the time to play and still do on occasion. (I'm scared to see what it looks like now. :cry)

There really aren't any "Hard Parts" on the WABDR. I think its mostly those who try it with street tires or lack of general dirt experience who find a couple of hills challenging. Remember, everywhere we are allowed to ride up here also has to accomodate a Subaru. :D

I must say. I had a serious pucker heading up that overgrown hill from Lk. Chelan. where you met Brokein2. The last time I did the WABDR I too was heading N to S and each and every turn I would think about meeting one of the many groups, I had read about, that were on the route heading North. :eek1 I think I just started riding faster to get through it quicker. :lol3

    Hey Leo,
    Of course we remember you!
You were riding with Kyle. Also, you were really hauling ass on Knoxville-Berryessa Rd. :clap

We're using the Excel A60, superlaced by Woody's.
It's the 1.6" one. Matt said he had the regular Excel (1.85") on the 950 and it still got trashed.

We're also running .70 springs - that probably helps.
    34 psi at all times...

Matt used to lift the front end if something looked really bad.
But, lately (after the re-valve and new springs) he barely slows down for rocks. We hit big ones, and at speed.
We've got a couple small dents in the A60, - but that's not bad, considering...

    Hope that helps!

Thanks, you guys!! (oh, sion. I'm sorry about some of those really stupid links - but, grazie!...)
    :raabia

OK, you don't have to watch any more. :lol3
I was just pouting because the sad "5" was bumming me out.
That wasn't even 1 view per hour of work for that one post. :cry

Then, my photos/screen shots were all scrambled up and out of order and I was having a meltdown.
    :baby Sigh.

I had dinner (and a glass of wine) and I feel better now. :norton
    :lol3

I'm still not sure what to do about Bethel Ridge.
Tomorrow is a busy day, but I'll look at the video again and see what I can do with it...

p.s. HardWorkingDog- yeah, that was a crazy game!
Matt was watching while I worked on the report. So much rain!

    p.p.s. Hi Uller!
Thanks for watching the video! :D
Yeah, there was a lot of traffic on the WABDR when we were there, too.
Makes all those blind corners really stressful.

Haha, I'm glad you liked it, Mike!
I love it when Barry Bostwick takes off his helmet and he has that headband on...
I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw that movie...

    :freaky

    Day 45: 8/5/12 continued
Near Lion Rock to Horseshoe Lake Campground 196 miles

    Gate duty.

Uh oh. I just noticed that sign that says "Discover Pass Required"
Oops. We tried, but we suck. :dunno

We finally met some inmates here!
Rivermonster on the left, Adventurerik on the right.
RM ride report, here. AE report, here.
They were having such a great time on the WABDR! Super nice guys, and really into the trail. :D

Matt checked out their WABDR map so he could see when to expect Bethel Ridge...

    Heading up to Mount Cleman...

This one's for the heavy equipment nerds...:D
We were trying to find a good spot to check out the view.

Mt. Rainier, peeking between the rock piles.

    Here we go. Meh.
There will be better ones, coming up at Bethel Ridge. :deal

I think there were some rocky sections between that Oak Creek sign and this pavement,
but I don't have any pics! :cry Sorry.
The GoPro was being weird, too...

We did see this group of BMWs... I was happy to get a pic of them.
Didn't see much luggage, so it must have locals doing a Sunday ride...

Matt wanted to do some video here, but the GoPro wouldn't work.
Turns out, it was so hot, it shut itself off.
    It was over 100°F, remember?

We were riding through these roads when I noticed that Matt was going pretty fast.
I poked him. Hey, what about the tires?
He said something like, "the bike wants to race!"
:huh Huh? What the hell is he talking about?
OK, but when that rear is totally shot, don't come crying to me...

Then I heard some honking behind us.
It was a guy on a DRZ400. He was hooting and hollering, pumping his fist.
OH. That bike wants to race...
    :rofl

We stopped and the guy was sooo stoked!
He was really fired up about watching us ride 2up on the 990.
Something about a 990 being his dream bike and he knew it would handle great!
    :lol3

He and his friend (on a KLR) were out for a ride, and were heading up to Bethel Ridge.
    Cool!
    We'll follow you, then...:ricky
He took off like a rocket!

We were going to let the KLR go next,
but his tires were bald like ours, so he said he'd catch up...

    The DRZ.

Matt was trying to balance FUN, with caution (that MT21 was sooo sketchy).
    It wasn't easy. :eek1

Normally, we don't mind rocks, but we were chunking up that tire so bad...:cry
Matt tried to go to the right, to avoid the rocks, but it wasn't any better. Just slower.

Doh! A deer! (sion will remember that one...)

The DRZ got around us and stopped.
We assumed we would see those guys up on Bethel Ridge, so we didn't stop.
But, we never saw them again. :dunno
We waited for a while, but they must have gone a different way.
    Too bad.
I think he had more questions about the 990...

Can you see that bird up there? Not sure what it was. Something pretty big.

And then right after that bird flew by, this weird white thing went by.
Another bird? I looked at the footage frame by frame and I'm not sure what it is.

:scratch You guys were so good with the polar bear/grizzly hybrid/spirit bear thing, give this one a shot, OK?

    All right, I'll stop here.
Bethel Ridge is next and I'm not ready... :rolleyes
There's probably all kinds of typos in this post, but I'm too tired to fix anything...

Are you in the mood for some Mameshiba?
