Hey baja ho, hey oldtrucks, and everyone - thanks for the kind words about the video!
I think we're starting to get the hang of riding together. :freaky
this next video (eagle canyon) is even better....

Hi LionBr! :wave great to see you again!

    Jimmy! You found us :D
It was great meeting you guys - hope you had a lot of fun. Too bad we weren't going in the same direction...
We saw those mountain dew bottles (both of them!) but didn't get any pics.

Hope you can hang in there 'til we get to the Lolo!
I sent you a PM :deal

We got stuck in Salina for a bit, then headed out for the UTBDR.
Matt checked - no, we didn't take buckhorn.
edit: it looks like we could have caught buckhorn after eagle canyon, but we went to devi''s canyon/Cat Canyon instead.
(oh, when we did start the UTBDR, we left from Mexican Hat. that's probably what you meant)

OK, coming up next - eagle canyon!

    Day 6: 6/27/12 continued
Salina, UT to Green River, UT back to Salina 249 miles

After Black Dragon, we make our way towards Swasey Cabin.
(just so you know, I wanted the Patrick Swayze/Chris Farley chippendales dancing for that link, but couldn't find a good one).
    just this really lame one

Didn't walk out to the cabin this time (I didn't, apparently Matt did)
Just used the facilities. :jive(and missed matt's walk)

    Signed the guest book.
I flipped through the pages and didn't see any TAT notes.
    Or ADV sigs.
    where is everyone? :dunno

    Eagle Canyon.

Some screen captures. I never think to take photos for this section.
The colors are a little off, but I'm too tired to fix them.

Same recipe as Black Dragon - rocks and sand.
But less red (more yellow) and with more flow.

    Jug Handle Arch

    Starting to see the bridges!

Here they are - the I-70 bridges.

Looking back the way we came.
This section was super smooth and nice this year.
There was a defined trail and everything!

That's the part we saw from the highway.

We stopped under the bridges and took a break. It seemed like a good place for lunch (shade).

The sandwich got a little mushed in the tank bag, but tasted okay.
    roast beef with veggies.

So, did you guys hear? :ear

I left a safety cone down there!

    Look in these trees.

    He's zip-tied to a branch.
If no one rescues him this year, I hope he'll survive until next summer.
I doubt that plastic bag is going to hold up. :cry

    Bye, little cone!

If you find him, or see that someone else has, let me know!

The wash got a little rockier once we got past the bridges.
But it seemed less crazy than it was in 2010 (that was a bad year for flooding).

Here's a couple more screen captures for the folks who don't or can't watch the videos.
I thought this step looked nice.

And then you gotta have pics of the square tunnels.
The video goes from the bridges, out of the wash, and up to the tunnels.

It was an awesome ride. Just dreamy.
Okay, here it is - sand, rocks, and some nice flow.
    (try it in HD)

Our intercoms were still jacked up, so I had to yell in order for matt to hear me.

Just for fun, you can compare it to the video from 2010.
(same bike, same section. But, handheld video and we have all our camping gear!)
Matt and I watched the 2 side by was pretty wild.
You have to pause the new video around 1:55 or so, then start the old 2010 video.
Un-pause when the 2010 video catches up.

Oh, by the way - I had a couple requests from nice people who wanted me to make our videos public so they're easier to find.
OK. it feels weird to have them out there, floating around on youtube
(as opposed to available only through these ride reports)...we'll see how it goes.

I didn't do all of them, but there are about 18 old ones and the 2 new ones right now.
Anyway, thanks for asking. It's great that someone wants to see them! :D

next on the menu - Devil's Canyon and Cat Canyon.
    Make sand your favorite!

DANG!!! That is some very skillful handling of a fully loaded 990. Riding 2 up in terrain like that takes some nerves, skill and an awesome Pillion to make it all happen. Nice work.:clap

It looked a lot easier (not easy) in the video this year. Pretty good that you did the 2010 version hanging on with one hand. More!:nod

Wow, LW was busy today! As usual, great report and many fine photos. We are heading out that way next week, can't wait! I really enjoyed those videos in HD. I sat real close to the screen so I could really get a good experience. A couple of times I had to jump back as I thought we were going off the cliff!:D

    hi bob and dave62538675309!
Glad you guys liked the vids!

    Hey dustyrider,
yeah, it's funny - I thought the trail was really torn up this year...until we watched the 2010 video.
But I think the handheld video is lower (not on top of matt's head) so the rock steps and stuff are closer.
There were plenty of big rock steps this year that we didn't remember.
Maybe different parts of the trail were eroded this time?

That's what's so great about sand/rocks/dirt - the trails are different every year!

haha, matt and I were just talking about that - how the angle of the camera makes it feel like you're really there,
especially if you get really close. Fun! Hope it prepares you for your upcoming TAT trip :evil
Let us know how it goes. :deal

    Yay! cap'n underpants!
glad you finally braved the computer to sign in and say hi. I fixed that quote for you. :D
Isn't it fun to see all the photos and feel like you're riding the trail again?
Movie Night was a hit! :thumb

psssst. RedRockRider, the name explanation is back on post#25
Click on those links, you guys!

that reminds me, I added one to the bathing-in-the-reservoir-post...
    for cap'n underpants, sans underpants.

I'm having some trouble uploading my screen captures, not sure what's going on...
But, check back in the (late) morning. Hopefully I'll get them all taken care of by then.

The next videos are pretty good, too -
you're going to see something special that you don't normally see in our reports...

    Day 6: 6/27/12 continued
Salina, UT to Green River, UT to Salina 249 miles

    So, to refresh everyone'’s memories...
when we left off, BigWan and I were emerging from the square tunnels...

After Eagle Canyon, it was time for the dreaded Cat Canyon.
I’'ve only seen but a handful of photos from this canyon,
and I don’t recall any video (larryboy? :scratch)
In 2010 it was raining when we got to the Cat Canyon turnoff,
and all the canyons had been flooded only a day or 2 earlier.

We knew (from experience :rolleyes) that the trail between Cat Canyon
and Salina turns to slick, nasty mud when it rains,
so in 2010 we reluctantly skipped this next section.

Now it was time to get it on video. :evil

In 2009, we were navigating solely by TAT roll chart.
This time, we had tracks and a real GPS.
    We still got lost.
Nothing looked familiar and the tracks were confusing.
Not the first time this has happened (or the last),
but we spent some time riding around, trying to figure out where we were.

We really notice that Delorme maps don’'t always match up with Garmin maps.
Sometimes we’ll swear that we’re on the trail,
yet Norm shows us as being next to the actual road.
Sometimes there’s another road, sometimes there isn'’t.

Anyway, this is what we were looking for -
Devil’'s Canyon would lead us to Cat Canyon.

More screen shots, for those who can'’t or don'’t look at video...

    Some deep sand.
We got bogged down in this stuff, but it was only a little warmup for Cat Canyon...

There are some nice rock steps in this section...

    And more sand.
The scenery is pretty neat, too.

Though it’'s hard to enjoy when you're just trying to stay upright...

    Lots of rocky drop offs...

This was a big '‘un. It caught matt by surprise.
In the video, you can hear him say, “oh boy...”

    And then he grunts.
We had launched off quite a ledge...
Stupid GoPro flattens everything out. :bluduh

    Oh well.

Things are starting to look familiar...

So, this post is all about the video.
It'’s the only way to fully appreciate the deep sand.
    Hearing the engine working,
Seeing BigWan wrestle with the handlebars...

Also, we had a silly get off while we were lost and looking around.
Not that it'’s rare (especially on this trip :D),
but this is the first time we'’ve caught it on video!
All 3 of us on the ground at once.

    Going slow is so dangerous!

Matt was worried that I got hurt, but I think I was just fixing the buckle on my boot,
    or cleaning the camera.
I don'’t even bother dusting myself off (KLIM, baby!).

I wish these things would automatically load in HD.
it'’s nice to see the sand.

This part of the trail was super fun.
    All those steps, etc...
I love it when the road comes at us like some crazy video game...

    Cat Canyon coming up...
