    Gifford Pinchot
    (1865- 1946)

Pinchot is well-known as one of America's leading advocates of the environment and conservation at the turn of the 20th century. He was born in 1865 to a wealthy family and in later years was able to use his money and his love of nature in order to raise awareness for the protection of the environment.

BenchRacer117 with the pissed-off-scary-‘stache that became a theme of this ride, many several hilarious jokes were launched off ridge tops, into dark canyons, flung into hanging moss and up in smoke around the campfire.

We had perfect conditions and no one got 'that' lost.

As Mr. Pinchot aged, his moustache grew much larger and his happy, gallant expression eased knowing perhaps that his awesome trails would someday be gleefully enjoyed and respected by the children of his adventure infused offspring.

We had no idea but maybe he foresaw our enthusiasm for the Pacific Northwest.

    Happy-scary-moustache guy prepared to roost.

An easy 4.5 hour drive north after work on thursday, into Washington State and up north near Mt Adams to find our preferred campsite vacant and waiting.

Friday morning we got going fairly early. Hockin smoking everyone out with his 300.

    Camped by this little lake.

We had some rain overnight but it looks like the clouds might just be rolling around with a 20% chance of sprinkles.

We fumbled around but found the trail head we wanted. As we came onto it 2 Hondas were just taking off, the leader thought we were his buddy and had no idea there were 5 other bikes chasing him up a 3rd gear, medium speed hill climb ‘warm up’.

We stopped about 6 miles in to surprise the leader - my arms are on fire already.

As usual, we didn’t take enough photos and never got the best action as there was rarely a place to stop.

Stihlrigg on TE 450 Husky with used knobbies and his headlight is apparently working at this point (more about that later) - the rest of us had trials tires.

Up on a bench headed north the trail is smooth and flowing, everyone is riding strong and the bikes are singing in the cool mountain air.

There’s a bike in there somewhere.

BenchRacer on his 250 Husky with a big tank and plenty of fuel (more about that later)

If the whole place were like this you could do 150 miles of it.

The volcanic sand was delectable this morning and the temps although a bit humid were comfortable at this altitude.

Trials tires should be mandatory up here!

Everybody is loosened up by now and no bike problems.

Instead of taking the time to look at our map we charged up and over this mountain which took us several miles out of the way and into another drainage to the west.

    BenchRacer -

We thought this was the trail that rolled along the top of this ridge.

Hockin down there climbing through difficult rock section.

Stihlrigg - keep it out of the huckleberries!

    Mt Adams.

Ooops, we rode down off the ridge and realized the mistake. Had to back track over the same ridge to get back on our intended route. Not a problem, it was fun both directions.

Oops - took a wrong turn and did some back trackin' which was really fun both directions.

Switchy switch backs that flowed like a bobsled run. No photos of that.

Even with the gear I had on hand (they had the same) , I'd rather make it back to camp where the beer is. BenchRacer and Stihlrigg ALMOST spent the night out here.

    DAY 2 saturday

the guys camped near us took off early in the sprinkling. 71 miles the day before and over 150 for Stihlrigg left us late to get started but realistic in our plan for the day.

We got going too but one guy hit a tree or something at the start.

Really hard to stop and take pictures but this one corner allowed a view way down the trail to the right and the corner.

Bridge out - we knew that but wanted to see for ourselves.

    Hmm, no problem.

Excellent riding on untracked trail as no one had bothered to cross the stream for quite awhile.

    Fuel dump -

    Unreal forest action -

I think it's called Juniper ridge even though I didn't see any juniper trees. Yeah, the cliff-side death trails are the price you have to pay for those flowing berms below!

Now we know to stop and actually read the maps at critical junctions. Just because it looks like we've been through here before it's prudent to check - plus I'm using a compass on the sleeve just to keep my bearings in the dark forests.

Came up on this logging operation which closed the 118 trail. We had to wait for some pickups to get out of the way - in the meantime, this huge machine began unloading while we're parked right next to it. Geeesh man, gimme a second to get out of the way! :eek1

SuperVW is doing great on his rebuilt (no longer smoking) XR250. New to this type of riding, he's keeping up and handling everything he's thrown into.

This section was really fun going this direction.

Hockin on his 300 - I gotta get a smaller bike, the 525 - even with trials tire and 52 tooth rear sprocket is a handful. The 2-strokes are laughing!

    Neff is railin'

Quite a change from the dusty silt we've been riding all summer - deluxe chocolate supreme! :clap:clap:clap

    SuperVW -

BenchRacer is too fast and I could barely get the camera out.

    Zero dust!

    Yummmmm! :freaky

The last stop for the day and one more look at the map.

More loamy forest action to back towards camp.

Everyone can 'smell the barn' or perhaps the beer cooler.

    Neff -

    Hockin -

Older Mr. Pinchot still rockin' the huge 'stache -

Back safely at camp BenchRacer breaks out the moustache shirt.

Then squeals like a little girl when the camp robber grabs a cracker off his hat! :lol3 :lol3 :lol3

Adam from the camp nearby has the ultimate machine for the Gifford -

51 miles on my bike today and the ride was perfect.

    THE END -
