Something I've always wondered (no, not about the girl - who is cute), is not having a front brake on a Harley Davidson a fashion statement or is their some other reason to remove/disconnect the front brake? I don't really mean to focus on Harleys, as some other bikes have the front brake disabled - maybe this is a feature of choppers in general (although I don't consider the Harley in the photo a chopper)?

HD's are long and low and can really haul down with only the rear brake.
I know you are now taught in bike classes how the weight transfers to the front wheel.
I can lift the rear wheel off the road with the front brake on my sport bikes...so little use a rear brake does...except on long bikes.
My KTM 950 ADV rear brake works great.

Not all old bikes had good front brakes, as good as a modern disk brake.
And, yes Wilbur, the front brakes with, "out of service life" would lock up and cause a crash faster than you can say, "Oh sh1t:.

My understanding is that back in the late '40s and '50s when modifying motorcycles and building choppers started to become a thing, a big part of the idea was to reduce weight as much as possible. The early Hells Angels called full dress Harleys "Garbage Wagons". The riders wanted performance and removing parts was cheaper than building higher performance engines. It seems that there was also some borrowing from drag bikes and land speed bikes that often used spool front wheels. See Rollie Free's bike below.

After a time the cosmetics of the bikes became more important but many of the early styling cues remained. Front fenders were removed. Rear fenders were bobbed. Large Fat Bob tanks were replaced by smaller Peanut or Coffin tanks. The increased trail that many many Bonneville bikes used to get stability was adopted and then forks started getting lengthened. Note the raked out front end and no front brake on this high speed triumph.

Things like ape hanger bars, sissy bars, and chrome everywhere were all for looks. Still compare these old school Harley choppers to the above land speed bike and you can see many similarities.
