Comparing these two bikes (not the girls):

The lower appears to be is a customized (i.e. stripped down) version of the upper (at least the frame). From some reading, it seems these front drum brakes didn't work much and removing the internals, cable, and lever cleaned up the bike and probably lowered the weight a bit. It seems between 1958-1972 a better (but still not very good) front drum brake was used. I will admit I like the looks of the customized version (with a shovel head engine) a bit more than the stock panhead (maybe the rider makes a difference?) - but it's not night and day.

Absolute horse manure. That is a mostly stock FXE Shovelhead - which came with a narrow front end, and it has been replaced with a non-customized FLH fork - which is only missing the tin. The "mechanical" front brakes had the very same size shoes and drums from 1949 thru 1971 - and nobody ever left off a hand lever or removed the guts from a drum to "clean up the bike" or "lower the weight" to ride in traffic, either. Back in the 1980's when that wide front end came back in style, the price of those things rapidly went up ten times, and I knew more than a few guys who pieced one together with whatever parts became available, whenever they could get their hands on them! :bluduh

Don't be shy now... spit it out - your trying to say that some doofus put a set of stripped down panhead front forks on a shovelhead frame then disconnected the front brake. My only question: how did such a doofus get such a cute girlfriend?
