That's what I plan on doing for now on. The rick mayer seat is $319 for most bikes if you only do the front portion but have the back recovered to match. That's about on par with most good aftermarket seats and probably much more comfortable.

I put a Russell on my fjr, I'm a believer in custom seats now. I'll likely never buy another aftermarket seat.

I have also heard of riders of bikes like KLR's buy the cheap atv seat covers and then also use a sheepskin pad. I think it is all about finding the right combination if you don't want to spend the big bucks for a seat. I have a sheepskin pad that I use on my FZ1 and I think it makes a huge difference.

Thanks for that, I found this company that supplies 16mm medical grade gel pads with straps. I might try one of those and a can always stick a bit of sheep skin on the top too?

If I like it, then I can always get it fitted to a custom seat.

I'm not going to lie, it was the first time in a while I missed my GS. It was hard pack, with large rocks sticking out. Then, every so often, it wouldn't be hard, and super thick new gravel. I just stood on the pegs and throttled through it.

I've enjoyed this thread a lot and decided to pick up a project Sporty.

A guy I work with is cleaning out his garage and offered me his 02 XL1200C with <7k miles on it for $1500. It's been sitting under a pile of boxes for 7 years... pics to follow...

A couple of shots of ATF/acetone 50-50 (or Marvel Mystery oil) in the cylinders and let it sit a couple days before trying to start it. Push it back and forth in gear to make sure the motor is free.(nothing to lose, everything to gain). Drain all the crap out of the gastank. James Gaskets CV carb rebuild kit (or Custom Chrome's same quality, less $). New AGM battery. Get the HD service manual - it's the best there is.

    It'll run.

    Have fun!

I went to look at the bike after work today, and quickly decided it needed to be in the bed of my truck. The engine turned freely, the clutch did its thing and the trans was the typical industrial Harley. Progressive shocks, Mustang seat, HD leather saddle bags and mounts along with two Rubbermaid containers and two large cardboard boxes of goodies like new in the box chrome fork lowers, quick detach backrest, new windshield with hardware and at the bottom of one box... another brand new set of Progressive shocks, and still in the wrappers Vance & Hines chrome something exhaust ...

I handed the guy the $1500 in cash, signed over the title and hauled ass...

Here are the obligatory crappy cell phone pics:
