Years ago thats how I came by my 1200 Aspencade. The owner borrowed a friends 1500 and his wife refused to get back on the 1200. Big difference between the Princess seats.

    Not to go off-topic, but...

...I've been interested in the GL1500 for a long time and you can get pretty good buys on them these days...but the size is intimidating...

How do you get used to dealing with the weight and size of the machine?

Maybe that's better left for another thread.

Keep the photos coming...your Goldwings are awesome and the hack rig offroad is impressive!!

I suppose it depends on how you're skillz are and what bike you're coming from. This is my first GW, but not the first I've ridden. With the exception of the known issues, this thing handles like my XR says me. Despite twice the weight and half the suspension.....

Well this thread came to late. I sold my ten year old 1800 a couple of months ago to buy an Electra Glide. There is no question the GL 1800 is the best handling cross country touer ever made. Sorry Harley. You look better and sound nice but for big mileage the GL's the way to go.

Now about off pavement. Three years ago I was riding Parsons Branch Road deep in the Smokey Mountains on my Dakar. About halfway through I came upon a guy with his wife having a picnic, they were 2-up on a 1800 Wing. I told him I had a Wing in my garage but would never take it this far into the woods. I saw them later at the Deal's Gap store so I know he made it out. He really earned the shirt.

Already done - we spent the day on it riding the Great River Road in southern Minnesota and into Wisconsin. I've been subtly pointing out the drawbacks of the 1200... "Geez, I'm glad I could still get this part... this thing is getting pretty old... will need new tires soon." etc.

My last "big" bike was an XJ650 about 20 years back. The GL is big but the center of gravity is so low that you don't feel it.

I posted in the old thread, still need to update pictures though. Here's one from last year.

I try to stay off of 1800's. Still trying to put kids through collage so they can support me when I retire :)

As I recall that stretch is on the lower elevation of the General's Highway or CA 198 heading North.

Nearbye is 245, which is pretty lonely and almost as twisty.

I bought Big Red about 6 months ago. I took it on a Forest Service road by accident but I was surprised how good it did. It was hard pack with bumps.

Stole these from the other thread. This is my 1990. I have a '97 that needs a little work. May be done this fall or over the winter. Love the Wings!

Not sure if this qualifies, but I followed this guy's swerving tracks for over 350 kilometers on the Demptster Highway. He was riding his wing-thing 1500, street tires, cup holder, ice chest and all. He also rode it over some nasty, slick, muddy and otherwise "wild" country and road.

I was riding my GS Adventure, TKC's and all. By the time we met in Eagle Plains, I figured that over the entire distance and excluding my stopped for bears time, that I maybe only gained 40 minutes on him.

I guess that the point may be, ride what you have. It's not always the machine.

    Cheers,

    40-Mile
