so, ummm, i wasnt gonna update this thread for a while... kinda felt like it has been floundering a bit lately... so was gonna leave it till i buggered off on a decent ride... but...

today was an interesting day.... :evil

lets backpedal a week to last wednesday... so yeah, i got a new 20012 F800GS... it was a week late, but all good, and a great deal!:D

it was nearly 2pm by time i left melbourne, but i just jumped on the bike and after 18 months off of one of the 'big bikes'... and it all just worked, felt right...

i'd worked out earlier that i'd aim for Port Fairy that night... there was a few ways to get there depending on what time a got away... i was 'late' so headed straight for Colac then down thru to gellibrand.... the twisties down to Gellibrand were great... and a nice return to the big bike.... not quite as tight as a lot of the Ocean Road... but nice to get my feel back...really enjoyed it....

a fuel stop at good ol' Gellibrand General Store:

then down to Lavers Hill and onto the Great Ocean Road...

and a great twisty ride thru to Port Fairy...

checked into the backpackers and then hit the pub for a fairly ordinary mixed grill and a few beers...was fairly buggered so got a longneck and headed back to the backpackers for some quality telly (family guy, simpsons) and a quiet beer then hit the sack...

next morning looked like a good day for ridin..

i needed to be in Mount Gambier by 10:30am to get my 'Teir 2 I.D inspection' so i could get registered... so it was a pretty no eventfull ride thru... but i did take a couple of smaller bitumen 'shortcuts'... and was tempted by a hell of a lot of dirt ones :evil

    refueled at Dartmoor...

needed a 'squirt'... but they were out of order....

so stopped a few km out of town for one...and a photo or 2... :deal

made it to Mount Gambier in 'plenty of time' :evil for my 'i.d inspection...

then around to the Rego office to hand over wads of cash to the gubbermint for rego and a number plate...

and since i now had a bmw, it was off to my favorite Mount Gambier bakery for a coffee and a feed...

walked back to the bike, and a dude with almost as good a number plate as me had parked next to me...

so then it was off home to let the 'farkling' begin....

number plate went on, that stupid lookin victorian rear mudguard came off, the old bashplate went on..

i like the shiney sandblasted stripe :evil

i started to put on the Barkbusters, but soon discovered i was missing a bit from each side....they are now in the mail :deal

i put on the sexy Leo Vince can (got it thru Renazco Racing in the USA.. (inmate on here 'Renazco'), locally they are $950 bucks and a 3 week wait... got one thru Renazco for $325 plus $70 postage (US $) in 7 days... (worked out with conversion etc to $414 Australian.... Wayne Gardner will have to pay his own rent this month :eek1 )

hard wired the GPS and wacked in the rallymoto damper..

all good... just waiting on the bits for the barkbusters and also a luggage rack...

then the TCK's went on yesterday :D

so, back to the moral of the story...

today was Physio day again.... its about an hour drive each way... but my bus 's rear drive shaft is laying on the ground waiting for me to put in a new uni joint...and the one i got yesterday is a tad too big... so i needed to ride to Physio today...

since i have the knobbies on, and since i have another 2 months of physio, i figured i should leave early and start work on a dirt way of getting there :deal :evil :D...

so i buggered off, took lots of dirt roads...

    found some dead-ends...

and then found a kick-ass track, that pretty much disapeared...but i pushed on...

not sure why...perhaps its the bit of time muckin about on the little 250cc... but i feel a lot 'looser' on this 800 than the old one... dunno... but a lot more confident...

and this bike doesnt seem as sleepy as the last one... although she did find one comfy spot for a nap :D

but given the crap i was riding thru i figured that was fair enough...

then i hit some 'hard' lake edge.... that was pure stinky slippy clay underneath...

    :D

so after a lot or mud n scrub n rocks n other stuff, i thought i'd found the start of a track out (gps said i wasnt oo far from a town..) ... but it soon became obvious it was actually a drain (i came to a culvert over it.... :evil .. no pics as it was too much fun carving up each side to avoid big mud patches on the flats.....

anyway i popped out and stopped in a little town fo a drink, a look at the mud and to work out just how late i was running for Physio...

so i gunned it up the bitumen to Physio.... then buggered off home 'in a straight line, unsupported' thru the pine forests etc.... bloddy good fun...pines, tracks, fire breaks, grass, old railways....the works....

not really surprised i didnt take any pics on the way home....too much fast fun...

    so anyway....

as i said at the start of this post....this post wasnt going to 'be'.... but today i had tooo much fun.... so i knew that, even though last week, when i knew i was about to pick up a new bike,... i wasnt really that excited.... that i'd made the right decision to get back on the bike....

    tonight i cant stop smiling....

all you good folk who offered words of wisdom and support over the last 18 months ( :eek1 ) were right.... perhaps it is now in my blood...

    i love it...

and cant wait to be 'Gone Again'...

    thank you....

How I missed this RR......I do not know:huh?
Thanks for coming back with updates even thou some of them must have been painful!

Fantastic attitude, humour, photography (the bike/landscape parts anyways - your medical photography skills need some work thou) and perseverance!

Yes, I would agree that the bike and sense of exploration is in your blood! Kudos!

I have one question that you may not be able answer, but I thought I would ask anyways for your thoughts:

Looking back, did you ever try thinking through what actually caused the lower leg damage?

Yes, I know a spill happens in milli-seconds, but in all the time you spent in the hospital bed, did you ever care to try and figure it out?

The reason I ask (this seemingly stupid, irrelevant (and possibly insensitive question)) is that I have had several discussions with other riders about the pros and cons of indestructible aluminum panniers and lower leg/foot injuries always seem to be part of that discussion(??).

    Any thoughts?

    its an interesting question....and one i'm kinda surprised no-one else has asked/mentioned (too polite i guess:lol3 )

anyway, yes i've heard all the theories on hard panniers...and agree they have some merit (the theories)

as for what happened to me.... no, i dont really know.... i have no memory of events from seeing the 'roo airborn, to the track skidding past my face and a great rate of knots...

i couldnt even say for sure that i hit it square on...i wouldnt be surprised if it took me out mid bike...crashing into my left leg area...

how i broke my right leg...dunno... and no, i have not really thought about it.... i started to think about it a few times, but wasnt all that fussed to 're-live' it.... and didnt really see a lot of point....it wouldnt 'undo' anything.....

it is a possiblity the hard panniers had something to do with it, but given the bike ended up backwards, and on its left side, and ended up to the left of me.... my best guess is that i prob got hit by a cartwheeling bike...... you can see how a broken leg is kinda lucky in such circumstances... and why i dont think too much about it... :eek1 :deal

ive got me some new hard panniers :D

but i'll prob get some soft ones too...and alternate depending on where i'm going....

so, Christmas was fast approaching... that meant a trip to Melbourne to see mum... :D

got the barkbusters sorted and hard-wired in the GPS

i had the knobs on the bike already, i didnt have panniers sorted yet... was suposed to have... but didnt....:cry

so... it was gonna be a 'tie shit on the back trip'.... :D

fueled up me and the bike in Mount Gambier and then headed east along the coast...thru nelson then off into the pine forrests...

fairly sandy tracks in these forrests...

i'd been running 40 psi in the TKC's to try conserve them on the highway... but once i got in here it was obvious some air needed to go...

it was nice to be 'out n about' again...

eventually i was out of the pines... then it was a trip down to Cape Bridgewater....never been there before...nice little place...

stopped at a spot called 'bishops rocks' (i think :ear)

and since it was a hot day i climbed down and went for a quick swin to cool off... :D

then hit the dirt again and headed towards Cape Nelson... a few tracks dont go anywhere anymore due to new wind farms in the area...

ended up finding my way down to the lighhouse...

you can rent the old lighhouse keepers house...

all kept in really good condition...

figures there was a good view of the sea from here too...:deal
    [IMG]

anyway time was getting on, so back on the bike again...

    past this guy.....

    past more windmills..

by-passed Portland and hit the main road around to Port Fairy... checked into the YHA, went got some crap japanesse take-away.....

got a couple of nice cold take-ways from here...

and had a stickynose in a few shop windows on my way back to the hostel to eat drink and have a merry old sleep (after watching a soccer match and having a chat to a girl in Adelaide about some 'plans'... :deal

tomorrow was due to be a day in the Otway ranges.......

next morning was up and hungry...

packed and rolled down to the main street to find a feed to power me thru the day...

ended up choosing home made baked beans, corned beef hash browns and some other bits n pieces....

wasnt expecting this but i guess...it is what it said it was... :eek1

washed down with some coffee, i was ready to roll...and then get on my bike and go... :D

    fueled the bike in Warnambool...

then hit the Great Ocean Road.... and then left it for the Old Ocean Road :evil

    .

    was a beautiful morning...

then headed down 'Blue Johana Road'... steep n gravelly... with some bitumen in places....

    .

and into 'Johanna'... only a campground and some great surf beaches.... nice place....add that to the 'places to camp list' :deal

then it was back up the hill via 'Red Johanna Road'... which turned out to be all bitumen..

    .

next was a spin down to Cape Otway Lighthouse... this road is now all bitumen......

    .
there was heaps of tourists along this road.... you could tell they were tourists as they were stopped everywhere, tempting fate with the huge population of Drop-Bears' along the road.... i snapped on quick pick as i kinda rolled by....i wasnt gonna stop....sure i had all my gear on, but kevlar, gortex and all that fancy stuff aint no match for those freaks! :eek1

it was also clear to see vast patches of stripped bare trees where the Drop-Bears had completely stripped the trees of any leaves... (no photos...to dangerous:deal )

it was well into the afternoon by now and i was gettin a bit peckish... saw a sign to a caravan park and kiosk about 5 or so km before the lighthouse so ducked in....but they had nothing to 'eat now'.... (what no pies!) i'd also seen some signs that there was a 'cafe' at the lighthouse... so i just grabbed some water, a photo of the bike :D and headed for the lighthouse....

got to the lighthouse....and the 'cafe' was in the lighthose grounds... which has a $25 admission fee!! :eek1:huh:eek1

i spoke to the guy in the 'gift shop' (which you could enter for free :deal ) to confirm 'that it would cost me $25 to go to the cafe'...."yep" he replied... 'and then i still have to pay for food there?'..... yep...

i bought a packet of chips from the gift shop and buggered off :evil

i tied the chips on the back...hoping they didnt fall off and was Gone...once-more :D

i ran the gauntlet with the Drop-Bears again, but turned of onto the dirt again about half way back to the main road...

    .

.the road wound down to another great lookin campground...

i checked out the campground , then pulled up in the carpark for lunch.... hopin my chips were still on the back....

    just! :eek1

    .

not sure when that happened...but was glad everything held on...

    first 'battle-scar'...bent numberplate :D

so ate chips, went for a mosey down to the 'beach'..

and then had to go back the way i came in..

    'cept i found a little detour :D

    which lead to another 'beach'

    with lots of rocks...

    .
then it was time to think about getting to Apolla Bay where i'd booked a bed for the night...

but still time for one last 'detour' just short of Apollo Bay..

    .
which lead to another walk...thru snake infested country....

    but the walk was nice...

and i made it out without being attacked by snakes or tree branches :deal

then it was into Apolla Bay... checked into the hostel (nice building!) unloaded bike and then went for a spin around town a fueled up the bike...

then headed out to wash the dust down..

sat at the bar watching some soccer and contemplated a feed... chatted to a few locals...

including one woman who asked 'if i'd come with her to pick up a dinning table from a friends place...'

'does that line work for you often?' i asked....

anyway we chatted a bit... and i had a bit of time before the kitchen shut...and figuring it was a good way to see a bit of the area...after a while said...sure left go get this table...

so we jumped in her car...and buggered off up some dirt roads...., loaded a dining table onto her roof...and before we got back down the mountain, the fog came in...real quick...

    kinda blocked out the sun...

    .
    .

so anyway.... by time i got back to the pub, the kitchen had shut :eek1

but a fish n chip shop nearby was still open...i want in placed my order and waited.....

and then the owner decided it was Karaoke time :eek1

his singing was real loud and 'sharp'...:lol3

all the other customers just looked around at each other and laughed....most left....

i had to wait for my tea....

    the singing got loder...

    come on...sing along.... :eek1

thank god my dinner was ready....

i left, ate my tea on the footpath, almost took a picture of this old guy on a ktm in shorts and shin gaurds...

and then decided that was enough for one day....and went to bed! :lol3
