    Gday Kym..

i'm a fan of the mitas rears... e09 dakar for the real rough stuff (get btw 8-10,000km) or a 07 for ,everyday use..

fronts i always drift back to the pirelli scorpion rally.. get close to 20,000 out of those.. i find it moves around a little in the loose stuff but i havent
found anything i like better... i suspect the F800 is pretty lite in the front so that may not be helping..

unfortunately, i didnt make up too much time....

i was on the Barkly Highway heading west...

about 45km west of camooweal, i turned left/south off the highway...

this road train was stopped on the side of the road...figured, since he was coming the other way, he'd have
a fair idea how the track was.....

he was under the truck playing with the brakes...engine running... so i waited by my bike till he got out so i
didnt scare the be-jeebus out of him..

he reconed the track south the 120-odd km down to the Sandover Highway was not toooo bad... but the Sandover was trashed all
    the way to Argadargada...

it was about 500 km to my next fuel....

    off i went.....

i veered right at Austral Downs Homestead....

    and continued south..

another fork.... right again, onto the smaller track... (left was a shortcut into Lake Nash community

so yeah... the not so well used track south...

    .

    .

    .

    .

and 120km later....i hit the appropriatly named 'Sandover' ummmm "Highway".....

i turned right, and started heading south-west....into the afternoon sun.....

it had been a long hot day...so after about 50km, i left the 'highway' and rode off into a long-dry lake to camp for the night...

    .

    the sun set...

    and the moon rose...

everything was in order with the world...

    .

    .

    so i went to bed...

since it was going to be hot, and i didnt know what lay ahead, i was up and into it early the next morning....

    back out onto the 'highway'..

it was good going for a little while...but then the bulldust started to kick in...

there was the odd small section of hardpack clay sheeting...

    .

in general it was about 150km of deep bulldust....

my fuel consumption was going thru the roof.... acording to the computer, i was getting about 11kms per litre..
down from btw 22-26km per litre... i'd budgeted on getting about 18km...

i wasnt going to get there........

the road had been graded that many times that the road was now well below ground level... the side embankments were
too steep to ride along without sliding back down onto the 'road'..

the ground off to the sided was just as soft and too scrubby anyway...

i continued on as best i could...

i stopped every now n then for a rest and a drink...

one stop, i heard a vehicle coming the other way..

a 4wd fish-tailing all over the road crawled over the crest ahead of me...and pulled up..

had a chat to the fella..he had something to do with ownership of the shop at a community near each end of the highway..

he told me 12 siesmic exploration roadtrains had come thru about a week ago and destroyed the road..

worst he'd seen it in the 12 years he'd been out here...

    marvelous...

anyway, he confirmed that the had gone into Argadargada...

    he continued on...i continued on...

as you can imagine...i wasnt too concerned with taking photos of the mad sections...

    some good bits..

    .

and finally i got to the turnoff to Argadargada....

road not so bad after that...

    .

breathed a bit of relief when i hit the point the Binns track came in from the north... since i'd only seen 1 truck yesterday, and 1 4wd today..

it looked like i was going to make it to my fuel stop at Arlparra Community..

but when i saw a sign pointing left to fuel 1km off the rd at Ammaroo Homestead, i headed in there..

took a bit of riding around the homestead, but i eventually found a girl who opened the shop and bowser for me..

had a bit of a chat... she said apparently there is a road crew working their way up the highway fixing it...

    fuel coke and sandwich...yay....

then happily out onto the 'highway' again ...65 km down to Alparra.

i got there just as they were closing up for the night..

but the japanesse fella running the bowsers waved me in...

he couldnt speak much english, but i learned he had flown straight from japan to Alice Springs, where he had been
picked up by the shops owner and taken straight out here to start work...

god i'd like to see the brochure he read before signing up to that...!

i headed back out onto the 'highway' and continued south-west...

    .

    .

    .

i was cautious going around every bend... expecting graders, trucks etc...

    .

but it never happened.... no roadwork crew fixing the road...

    i hit the Plenty highway......

    and turned left/east...

the bitumen made a nice change...

i even waved to the only other vehicle i saw that day... a big KTM coming the other way...

about 45km down the Plenty Highway, i rolled int Gem tree caravan Park and got a donga for the night... aww yeah, hot shower..!

(oh and the fella at reception 'home delivered' me a half chicken and chips for tea..!)

Another day, another girl and no photo.
    hahahahaa.
Ps. I saw no bends in the road in those pics. What is considered a bend around there, anything more than 2-3 degrees?
    Awesome report. Keep it up.

yeah any more than 2-3 degrees and you have to stop, get off the bike, drag the back end around till she's pointed in the right direction,
climb back on and get moving again....bit of a drag really...! :hmmmmm

next morning was a bit more relaxed... the 'difficult' bits were pretty much over for a few days..

i headed off from Gemtree, east about 8km before heading south down Pinnacle Rd into the East MacDonnel ranges..

(i'd wanted to come down another 20km east, thru Cattlewater Pass...but all my info was that it was now closed)

    nice 'easy' roads....

    and more bloody gates.....

    great day for riding..

    more gates... (and rules lol)

    .

    .

    i was making good time...

so i stopped to have a chat to this fella....

    .

id come down Pinnacle rd, and turned left (east) onto Arltunga Tourist Drive..

and so went past the bottom end of Cattlewater Pass...

then i came around to the turnoff to Ruby Gap...

i stopped for a drink.... it didnt look as though there had been any traffic out to Ruby Gap for a while..

i'd planned on camping out there tonight, but since it was only 1pm i had a bit of time so i continued on south

    .

and rolled into Ross River 'resort'...

grabbed some fuel, a beer, bite to eat, and 'borrowed' some wifi to check a few things.....

grabbed a bottle of red and headed back towards Ruby gap...

i'd been out here a few years ago and had a few 'puncture issues'.... the track was still narrow and rough..but seemed not as bad as last time..

    .

    .

    .

and after about 40km, i was at Ruby Gap..

    had a look around...

and settled on a spot to set camp...

    .

    .

    collected some firewood...

and sat down with a the bottle of red to watch the sun set....:jkam

after a fair while... and most of the red... i thought i could hear a vehicle... a bike perhaps....:ear

i kept my eye on the track... but the engine had stopped...

after a few minutes it started again and was getting closer...then..

    thru the bushes...

    .

    hey a DR...:hmmmmm

he had a bit of trouble getting up to my camp...:lol3

so a couple of weeks after he'd turned left, and i'd turned right....Phil was back... :clap

Thanks for posting all the photos GA

I'm especially liking the intersection photos around lake nash - the signposting around there could be a little better for sure

As everyone has already stated, Such a great write up mate, an epic effort goes into taking all the pics, loading them up, resize, remembering the track names and all the associated info., writing up the post etc, Wow it's so good and you actually take us on an adventure just reading your stories. Keep it up mate we love it so much. I sold my ktm 640adv a few years back for a break and I've got the bug again to get back in the saddle and get gone again. :)

Hi GA - Absolutely loved seeing the country you have visited. I regularly check this thread out.
Question regards your 80,000km milestone, have you has any unexpected failures from the F800GS? I am on around 40,000 now, and am curious to know what the next 40,000 has in store for me....
    Cheers

Carry a box of matches in your travels. Eventually you'll want to unhitch the panniers, kick the bike off it's side stand and simply set fire to it. GA has the patience of a saint with his machine. I'd have given in long ago and still be sitting beside the wreckage, toasting marshmallows and giggling constantly.

Hey GA, awesome story telling. You're report has been a lift to my spirits today. Thanks mate.

We have not really seen much of GA since March 3rd 2016 and it is now 12 August 2016...............................it is entirely possible he could be somewhere "sitting beside the wreckage, toasting marshmallows and giggling constantly". :dunno
