I was playing around with Google maps (beta!) and noticed some of the tracks I uploaded to Google My Maps showed up in the regular maps application.

hmm, well that's neat. guess I'll have to stop bashing Google maps as a possible guidance source. cool.

Once uploaded a gpx track, does it stay my own property?
What is in the license of the app?

you can use navigation, but it does not follow the track you uploaded, yet

it was displaying the track, until navigation started. (corrected this, thanks)

you can set the privacy in my maps, but I would bet that Google uses it for calculations without letting everyone see it.

I have been experimenting with an Android app I found called "Geo Tracker". It's mostly a one-trick pony, just hit one button and it starts dragging a line on a screen. At the end of the day or "route" there are a couple format-options for exporting once you get home and connect to a PC. One of the exports is certainly dot-GPX files.

A few more steps to it later, and some "import" experimenting in "My Google Maps" and I ended up with a test-route that could be e-mailed or shared, or I could pull it up later on my Android phone and see my current position in relation to the line or path the app saved. Just in the experimenting stage, but a couple of us took a ride and it logged the afternoon- with my phone shooting the signal through my aluminum top box to get the job done (testing it to see if it would work that way).

It cut out in a couple spots where I assume the signal was weak, but the app kept running and continued with the logging of the afternoon. Kind of fun to fool with.
At one point we ran into construction and had to turn around and back-track (road closed) so one leg of the ride has a chunk missing cause of that.
Upon importing the file in "My Google Maps" there was also an option to have it say how long the route was, and in this case it was a 122 mile test ride.

I could go out again now, pull up this route, zoom in or out on my Android phone and I would see my current position in relation to the blue lines and easily re-follow them or share them. I'm new to much of this but it was fun to be able to trace the day as a test.

Until you hit "start" and then it disappears. Likewise when you are in "driving" mode.

For whatever reason Google allows us to make our own ittenaries in My Maps but do not want us to be able to follow them in Google Maps.

This site uses Google maps onto which you can simply drag your gpx files in order to display them. I have used this to display really large files of lengthy trips. There are also some handy editing capabilities that allow you to split and join different tracks to create new ones.

Yea thanks, tried that and another similar one GPX2KML , but they are clunky to use (viewing, not the actual conversion) on my tablet compared to the goolge apps.
