    Congrats !

Beautiful watch, but the words “upcoming wedding” brings about projectile vomiting. Tell her it’s just an old watch that you gave a $100. This way, her attorney won’t list it as a divisible asset.

So, you're suggesting that watch collections should be protected by a pre-nup? ;)

Uh, not mine. I wasn't married but 24 hours before mine went off on the Speedmaster i bought prior to our wedding. I spent 5 years chasing a phd in EE, a year as a post-doc, even sleeping on my office floor when I was chasing money 'cause it was more time efficient than going home, and as a reward for finding a bit of research money (which turned into quite a bit of research money as time went on), i spent $640 on a Speedmaster. (This was in 1993.) While i was busting my a$$ developing new mathematics, she was blowing all of her dough on trips to europe.

I delivered both kids wearing that watch, and just sent it off to Omega for service - first service in 25 years (which reading above, might be a mistake). Live and learn.

I haven't bought a nice watch since - the closest is a Marathon GSAR, which i bought 'cause i can't see too well anymore, and i need to know the time all of the time.

Don't underestimate the things about which a wife can argue. Somehow spending less than the cost of a plane ticket to europe on a watch was perceived as excessively extravagant. Who knew? Oh well.

Beautiful watch, your new bride will certainly see the sentiment in the tear drop indices. Well played Sir.

I told her about it soon after, and we both enjoyed looking at the pics. She's a peach.

The girlfriend spotted a watch booth at Az Bike Week. So we took a look.

    Sorry for the shit pictures.

The first is $5K. The second is $9K. They are both automatic movements. I asked the sales dudes who made the movements. They could not tell me. I suspected that it was nothing but bullshit, designer shit watches, with some inexpensive "Swiss" movement. Turns out I was right. A little research While not a total shit movement, the ETA 2824 (in these watches) is more or less the Chevy Nova of automatic movements. They use other variants, it seems, from a little poking around on their website.

Anyway, there is so much of this expensive shit out there, I just don't know how people can be attracted to it. It's probably a total of $500 in materials that they are selling for ten times, or more, that amount. I just don't get the concept of flash over function.

How is that, or some of the others, $500 in materials? Wide-stitched leather boxes can be had for much lesssssssssss.....

I don't care if, qualitywise, they were worth the 5 and 8K dollars, they are ugly and would never get my money.

Are you sure about those prices? I looked at their website and Amazon and don't see anything over a couple of hundred dollars.

Yes. Those watches were all diamond encrusted, which doesn't show up in the pics. I actually thought I was holding on to watches that were a couple hundred dollars. When he told me that the first one pictured was $5K, I just about shit myself and handed it back to him.

Ha! Yeah - adding cheap diamonds to a $300 watch makes sense to me too!
