I am really interested in this idea of my family/friends being able to track me on my upcoming trip through Central America. This way, they will atleast know where I am. I looked at all of the moto units...
    help?

That's a cool system, but I am looking for something more along the lines of my family being able to log online and see where I am. Like a "fleet" tracker type deal.

An emergency locator would be good too, but thats not what the GPS Buddy is about.

This may not help in your situation but is a similar concept. Verizon Wireless has a thing for parents to be able to locate their kids when the kids are out and about with thier friends. It's called chaparone and what it does is it locates the kid's telephone via satallite and trasmits its location to the parent's phone and shows street names, locations etc just like GPS.

Yeah, that's what was mentioned earlier. I am really leaning towards using that system. I've already got a good GPS (Garmin V), and the SPOT has the emergency beacon thing too. And like you say its not all that spendy.
