    Likewise my friend. :D

This GPS map thing isn't looking too encouraging outside of a few major cities is it.

I did not think Garmins World Map had routing ..

Smellybikers 'Wanderlust' world map v1.6 is also avalible (no routing) ... v2 may have routing ..

You will find some free maps on

http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com/catalogue.php ... but you'll need to generate your own maposource preview files for them .. www.cgpsmapper.com

OSM www.openstreetmap.org/ ... they do have someone generating files to be downloaded to the gps .. cloudmade ... you'll find it if you wander long enough ... don't know about their India maps yet...

No sure your starting point but http://www.indiabikes.com/ had maps loaded in a PDA that was available for rent when I went last year. We did 1,500 miles on a Royal Enfield Machismo 500 without a GPS. Paper maps and compass worked for us,. The traffic is very aggresive!! A two lane road will regularly turn into a two lane road w/ two trucks heading your way, just hope there is some shoulder left for you. The trip was great and a well worth adventure. If you need any info just PM.

my only real concern was in the city

once out of town I don't really even want one

it was more idle curiosity than anything

fun to plan trips in your head even if it will be a while before you can go

same reason I like to collect maps I guess

Yep. In the country side I feel that you can stop and not be in the way .. where as in the city there is no free space to stop/hide.

I've got something like 2,000 raster maps ... about 6.6G
vector maps I have not added up ...
Err these are all digital - on the computer .. the paper ones are simply too much trouble to take out - spread out and then put away!

The links I gave above are sources for free garmin vector maps ..
