I'll skip over the history of Suzuki's GR650 for now, but I may edit some of these earlier posts with info and some pics some other time. Besides, anybody that clicks on this thread probably already knows a thing or two about Suzuki's red headed stepchild of the GS line......

When I bought the bike, it was in really good shape mechanically / electrically - good compression, valves up to date, brakes worked well enough, etc, etc.. Cosmetically on the other hand, it needed some work. Besides a new hobby over winter anyway! A quick Google image search turned up this bike - mine looked very similar (bit nowhere near as clean):

After riding it for a couple months enjoying the end of the season, I decided it was time to get to work. Everything needed stripped down, blasted, polished / painted, and generally cleaned up. In the process of stripping it down:

As you can see, rust was a big problem all over:

Somewhere in all that I guess I hated the black on the tank....looking back, I wasn't a fan of the blue either. Ha!

Look at that - I didn't screw up the electrical system!

Rear wheel installed, which meant I was able to roll the entire thing around the garage and make "Vroom vroom" noises:

Exhaust installed, but waiting on a drive chain. At the time, I was banging my head against the wall on the vinyl seat cover. Hate to admit it, but I used electrical tape so I could take it for a test spin without destroying the foam (after the chain was installed of course):

Once it was safe to ride, I started making some smaller changes - mirrors, grips, small windscreen, and the hideous "1980's metric cruiser" fender with matching square taillight:

That was it for a while. Riding season came around and it got ridden.......let me dig up the pics of it's next transformation ......

    And so it begins......

I had something happen in 2010, and my version of therapy was working in the garage. By then I had made a little cafe bike out of a Honda CL175, and thought that the GR deserved more than just "clean up and run it". I wanted it to be fun to ride.....instead of just the cruiser I was using it as. So I started changing some things. First up, the GS450 tank I scored for $80 (not shown: the massive dent on the other side):

The cylinders and head got polished too, but the head cover got some paint on it (my hands hurt and there are a bunch of small corners on this thing.....):

Fiberglass headlight shell from RocCityCafe (more on this later):

And I ordered the Hammer Endurance seat from Airtech. The GR650's frame wouldn't look right at all with a normal / flat cafe styled seat. The Hammer seat was large enough to cover the shape of the frame.

I can't find the pictures at the moment, but I swapped out the stock front end for one from a Gs650. The fork diameter and lengths were the same, but it had mounts for dual calipers - which I painted red:

Starting to look like something again.....fender installed, started mocking up the MAC 2-1 exhaust (made for a GS450, so it didn't bolt right up). Also traded the stock mag wheels for some spoke wheels.

Used the wheel and spokes from a GT750 to convert the stock 16" wheel to an 18" wheel:

I never did take a picture of the dent in the side of this tank.....but to make a long story short, my neighbor does body work and paint, and owed me a favor:

Looked so good I just had to roll it outside for a picture:

And so concluded another "wrenching season". Weather was nice, and the bike got ridden some more.........
