Good meeting you Chris, hope to get out on a ride with you soon! Best of luck with the 690 decision.
Well, I'm making Chris try the 950 before anything else....and you all know what happens once you drink from the big bottle!!
Hey Grand Junctioners,
I'm a 25 year old absolute noob when it comes to riding, and I was wondering if you all could suggest some good shops for riding gear. I went to Motorcycles Accessories down near Main St and they had some good selection, but I was wondering if there were any similar stores in town.
In addition to that question, I guess I might as well introduce myself. I'm formerly from the Denver area, and I've been in GJ for almost a year after spending way too long going to school in Texas. It's good to be back in Colorado, and I'm getting into riding because I love exploring this wonderful place we live in!
Welcome to the Western Slope!
Regarding gear, check out 2nd Gear in Clifton, all second hand stuff but some good deals. rockymountainatv.com is also a good source for all things "motorcycle". I'm in Montrose so when you're ready to explore the mighty San Juans let me know.
I'm from Gunnison, spend some time in GJ, and Fruita in the spring and fall. Happen to be there right now - mountain biking not motoring though. Anyway, I have been into a Honda shop on 25 road, right behind the Subaru dealership a few times. I am pretty new to all this, ride an older BMW, but these guys were extremely helpful and had a good selection of things I thought.
Interesting about 2nd gear. I'll have to check that out.
Was in GJ on business this past week. Played hookie on Tuesday and rode up Baxter Pass road as far as the KLR would take me. Hit some snow/ice shortly before the top and being an "old man" I wasn't in shape to try to muscle "Miss Piggy" through.
Fell on my ass in the mud turning around (engine dead) and she landed right in my lap! I finally got out from under her and uprighted but this Mid-Westerner was out of breath. At least my buddy didn't have to rescue me.
The point of this? I really envy you guys who live out there!!
Currently making plans to come out later this year to ride Engineer Pass and some other routes in that area.
Awesome, sounds like it was a great visit! Baxter Pass is great fun, matter of fact the entire Bookcliff range is a great place to explore!
Has anyone ridden around Battlement Lakes outside Parachute? I've heard there are some trails around there to ride. There is the one Jeep trail that goes up to the lakes, but I'm wondering what else is up there.
Hopefully much of the snow will melt by Memorial Day
I've heard about it, but never been... sounds like a great place to explore! I would imagine Memorial Day sounds about right for snow-melt. If you go, take some pics, I'd love to see and hear more about the area.
My backyard. Its an out and back trail, not bad but not high country single track either. Gonna have to get real hot real quick in the next couple of weeks for a Memorial day trip. Will keep you posted though
Just read on silverton's chamber of commerce website that CR 2 has been cleared all the way to animas forks!! The mountain season is upon us!!
Thanks. If there's not much riding up there anyways, maybe we will make some other plans. Is it just the jeep trail that goes to the lakes, and thats it?
Just got my 950 Adventure running again, and would be great to meet up with some other riders and do some riding.
Been here 7 years, but alas, life got in the way, but this summer I'm looking to change that. So many parts of this state I need to see.
We should plan a GJ area Meet & Greet ride one of these weekends... even something as simple as riding over John Brown to Moab and back for the day. See if we can get some other local ADV'ers out for fun & good times!
Well I just completed my rider safety course, and I'm excited to get my hands on a bike and hit the road! If any of you have any leads on a cheap ($2500 or less) KLR650 or something similar, let me know! The hunt begins! There are a handful of good deals on the front range but I don't have a truck, so I'm brainstorming solutions...
Also, I don't know if it's weird to ask this... but if any of you have a KLR and you wouldn't mind letting me take a look at it and maybe even teaching me a little about the bike, that'd be super helpful. Or if you know some kind soul who might be willing to lend me a hand. Not looking to ride your bike! But I honestly haven't even sat on one before. I'd like to see how I fit, mostly. I'm specifically looking at pre-2008 KLRs, simply because of price.
I'm down, and I have a buddy who also has a 990 Adv. Call the date.
Sweet! My bike is in the shop this week, hopefully will have it back in my hands for a decent test ride this next weekend. The following weekend is Memorial Day and I've got plans... how about the weekend after that?
Say, Saturday, June 1st?
Meet nice & early (8 am?) somewhere in Junction, ride down Unaweep Canyon to Gateway, then John Brown to Moab... either the North or South side of the La Sals. Late lunch in Moab, then back to GJ by the river road. We could ride from Cisco and some dirt roads to Westwater, then the old highway back to town.
June 1st would work great for me. Count me in.
Sounds good to me.
What do you ride? Maybe meet someplace downtown for some coffee before we leave?
Works for me! Any suggestions on a meeting place?
I ride a KTM 690 Enduro, little brother to the big Adventure and SE's.
