Post up the next time you are headed out to 3 lakes.
What entrance do you normally use?
I use the 441 entrance. I can meet some of you at the 192 and 441 junction at Holopaw at the gas station about anytime anyone wants to go. I live in St Cloud. The entrance to Three Lakes is about about 13 miles south of Holopaw then turn right on Williams Rd. I put a new set of tires on my 250 Kawasaki last week and they are not knobbies. I got around purty good. Since I only have a 2 gallon gas tank, I need to fill up everywhere I can or take some gas with me. Lots of hard pack roads out in that area. Lots of scrub cattle in there also. Some places are not for motorized vehicles. We have to watch and obey, you never know when law enforcement will be patrolling. If and when we get up a ride remember to bring water and something to snack on, its a long way out. I was in there about 4 hours yesterday by myself and rode around 50 miles of trails. Lots of them are straight but some are nice and curvey. I am retired and can ride any day except Mondays or fishing days. I can adjust my fishing schedule when I need to ride.
I'd be coming in from the south off of 60.
Do you ride mostly east or west of the turnpike?
I ride both sides of the turnpike, there are tunnels that go under the turnpike that makes both sides accessible when entering from the 441 side. As a matter of fact 441 is the only way one can enter on the east side of 523. There is a locked gate on the 523 side. One way in and the same way out. The west side of 523 is really not real good exploring or I don't think so. If you have never been over on that side, its a good place to explore one time. Lake Jackson is on that side and a place I call snake valley. I just about always see some venomous snakes over there. When looking at the map you posted above, it don't look like there is much riding and possible exploring on the 441 side, but those roads total somewhere around 50 miles round trip. Usually I am by myself and I stay in there about 4 hours riding with very few stops.
I grew up in Melbourne and just went through the whole thread and didn't even realize some of the area's you guys are riding. That said, I rode the credit union on my cr80 back in the day, awesome that it's still available.
I will be bringing my DR650 up on 30 April - 3 May. I am helping my mother move some stuff into her "retirement" house in Palm Bay. They still have their house in East downtown Orlando. I'm hoping to tool around a bit as I won't be able to ride much offroad with the current SM setup. I haven't ridden dirt in a very long time as I've been on a Yamaha R6 for the last 10yrs and didn't ride much for years prior.
Regardless, I recently bought the DR650 in SM trim and have yet to figure out a tire that I want to run that will work for my all interstate commute [50 rnd trip] here in S. Florida. I'm really thinking I want to find a suitable tire for on/off road, besides its not like I'm burning up the corners down here.
If anyone is up for a meet, shoot me a PM and let me know when/where.
I finally got out to ride some dirt for a bit today. Trails in the Palm Bay area are pretty dry right now.
It's definitely about time for some new tires. I've got a front IRC TR8 with around 8K miles on it, and a rear Kenda K270 with around 7K miles on it. Surprisingly, the chunky DR still gets around OK in the sand and mud.
Trails are fairly empty around here in the middle of the day right now. The heat and humidity might be factors. Stay hydrated out there.
Hey Kommando, are you doing any riding at the compound at all. I know it was shutdown several years ago but I'm not sure if anyone every goes out there anymore. I often wonder how often it's patrolled and monitored by Law Enforcement these days.
The heat is definitely oppressive lately. I was at the Marlins game here in S.Florida on Monday and for a kid that grew up in Florida and doesn't mind the heat so much, it seemed rediculously HOT.
I was followed most of the way out there by a Palm Bay officer this past ride, all the way from up near Malabar Rd, but he turned off somewhere by where Emerson turns into Bombardier.
I don't get any problems from LEOs out there, but I don't drink and ride, my bikes are street-legal, and I wear a bunch of gear with usually a hi-viz color.
I see people out there all the time with dirtbikes, quads, UTVs, 4x4s, remote-controlled aircraft, drifting cars, sportbikes, and guns. The only times I've known of somebody getting a hard time is riding untagged stuff on the pavement, going north of Bombardier Rd by the big hill, or when ripping close to houses by the east or south edges of the compound.
Looks like this thread has not had any activity in a long time. I got a new to me KLR 650 over the weekend and tried it out today at BullCreek. I think I am going to like it. I am not a burner. I will be riding 3 Lakes sometime next week if anyone wants to go. Jim
Riding good trials, Moto X, few hills and alot of sand most every day in good ole MLB, last night at dusk the weather was perfect, not hot at all in the gear, it has really dried up lately, A few days back a white truck pulled up at the swimmin' hole where I was watching some guys mess around with a stand-up jetski, Few other trucks hanging out...The white truck yelled "Leo is comming!!!" and EVERYONE took off...
I briefly saw a unmarked sedan across the pond and thought how did he get back here???? was quite exciting because everyone went a different direction, not sure if a street legal Dirt bike would get me in trouble out there but I was not going to hang around to find out, watching everyone pack up within seconds and bolt had me throwing on the helmet and roosting out the narrow trails avoiding the main "roads" out.
Gonna take a newbie to the Grant-Palm Bay trails I shared with everyone a long time ago starting at Valkarie rd....good to hear its dried up...that place has a really great section of high sand berms. If anyone wants to ride, PM me, It is advised to have aggressive knobbies for the trails I know (D606's etc.)
I miss the compound, I had a YZ250 my friend Ron had a RM125, we were so into riding we would ride at dawn before work meeting at 6:30AM for a quick session..spent alot of $$$ at ACS back then before the internet made parts ordering so easy and cheap (support your local Motocycle shop!), The big hill was the highest elevation in all of Brevard, never thought they would shut it down.
Was that out at the compound?
We were out at the compound a couple times before Christmas and all was ok. There always seems to be a ton of activities going on besides riding out there.
We did get an ear full from a guy in a pickup when we strayed into the Bombadier area, but it seems if you stay out of there no one says anything.
Valkaria is great when it's not so wet.
I'm up for riding on Saturday or Sunday mornings... let me know. I've heard there are some trails off Ellis too that I've been wanting to check out.
bdolnk - nah not at the compound, I know of gem of a riding area right in the middle of Melbourne, so good you will not even believe you are in the city, well know spot to many and not so much to others, I'll take you one day or PM me for directions, it is 15 min ride from Beachside to entrance then moto bliss with trails sand pit , moto X jumps, mud holes, rednecks, bonfires and good fun like the old days of the compound. The Older group polices it well and we make sure everyone packs up their trash and all bonfires do not get too crazy and are under control...i outed the Valkayrie rd to "horse trails" Grant to malabar road trail a while back when I first joined, now being a bit more discrete on my other spots . I ride after work 6-7:30 unless the surf is up, then its time to catch waves
Pics of this spot can be found on pg 6 and 7 when I used to have a KLR 650 now I am on a DRZ400, much better, KLR caused broken collar bone and aet oil like crazy ... No fun beast of a bike, wifey wanted to ride pillion that is why I got it , that lasted one trip, she was over it
I can do that. Let me know next time you go, and if you don't mind I'll tag along. I live in Satellite Beach
I sent you my number, surf has been good due to the Low pressure/subtropical storm, so no riding last few nights...May go riding today, or maybe Sat AM before it get too hot.
About 7 miles north of Kenansville on 441 there is a blue road sign that says Williams road. My brother and I will be there around 10 AM tomorrow morning. Thats the entrance to 3 Lakes wildlife management area. I will be on my 250 and my brother will be on my 650. We will be riding this area for a few hours. Its mostly hard pack. Anymore want to ride with us, come on out. Jim
