I might be off topic, but I think this is the place to have objective opinion from natives. I have an idea of winter ride in Greece. Thinking about mid january. Can anybody inform about weather conditions. As from web weather search is obvious that average t is 12-16 C, which is fine for us,Lithuanians. Does rain bothers a lot in January? Any input is appreciated.
Depends on the area you'll be riding. Be more specific so we can advise accordingly
Thanks Multidoc. I arrive from Macedonia E75 and would park my van in the first decent place, then continue with my dr 650. So initially the idea is to cover N-S distance and back in about a week, but my priority would be south region, Athenes, Kalamata, Sparta, Pilos maybe midland, and whatever nice is hidden there - you could tell more :) If weather differs a lot from N to S, then maybe it is wise to park the van far south ... Precipitation according to forecasts is about 45 %, that means every other day we woud have rain. Is that so?
translate this https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/Αλκυονίδες_ημέρες
and wait for those days to come.it's going to be a magic ride
usually happens the second half of january
as for the route start from konitsa https://goo.gl/maps/VfzdSDcdJkq
and through the pindos mountains to cape tainaro https://goo.gl/maps/5oRfkEartrD2
On the north part of Greece better is to stay near to the sea the temprature is much better, stay away from the mountains the weather is not stable....Peloponisos and Crete have the warmest weather in the winter....
Dont take high altitudes above 500m and you will be fine as you have winter equipment(corduras,boots,gloves...etc).Put a windscreen on the DR it will work against the cold air..
plumer1kt, zandesiro, Thanks.
What about accomodation, should I book in advance or it can be managed "live" along the way. I mean its off season...
I'd say you don't need to do any reservations in advance, you'll find plenty. If you do ride down to Peloponnesus, I'd suggest to ride from Kalamata to Sparta, road climbs up and down the Taygetos mountain, great twisty road with magnificent scenery
Thanks, MultiDoc for the input. I do plan to go all the way down, and maybe take a ferry to Crete, or Santorini. Btw which ferry service would one recommend?
whatever fits your route and schedule.you won't have problems with any of them.
Ferries are very regular and any that suits your timing will be fine. If it's totally out of season when you go, then do visit Santorini, otherwise stay away and enjoy the pics from there or be prepared to experience the gazillion of Chinese and other tourists.
For Crete there are 2 major companies doing the line Piraeus - Heraklion (central Crete): MINOAN.gr and ANEK.gr (which is same company bluestarferries.gr).
ANEK-BLUE STAR also does the line Piraeus - Chania (West Crete).
Routes are daily for both companies and unless it is a public holiday there is no need to book in advance. Just ride in the port and get a ticket from the ticket kiosk.
ANEK is cheaper but - at least in the line to Heraklion - their ferries suck big time.
Look for the Halcyon Days during winter, usually it is a period of 2 weeks with perfect weather. Mountainous regions will always be cold and despite Halcyon days there will always be chances of rain. Zandesiro suggested you stay below 500 meters altitude, generally that's the rule. I might be a little more adventurous and put in my radar areas up to 1000 meters altitude.
Peloponnese & Crete are great options for rides during Winter.
Sincere thanks to all of you. I hope to make it happen.
