Ground up Resto on '96 GasGas JTR-270

    Picked this beauty up in Dayton OH came with the trailer, helmet, gloves, and a SR nameplate...And boy did it look ready for assisted living...

    But with a bangle here and a bauble there.

    -Scrubbing bubbles (Lots of 'em)and a pressure washer!!!
    -Tear down
    -Sandblast, Weld, and Powder-coat frame
    -all new hardware assembled with either Loc-tite or neverseize
    -Engine Teardown
    -Water pump seal Kit
    -New brake pads&lines
    -All fluids
    -All filters
    -Carb rebuild & re-jet
    -Domino Grips (Not pictured)
    -Rear Fender
    -New rear shock, dogbones, bushings and bearings
    -Rebuild forks (New seals and dust covers)
    -1 Tube of grease for all the bearings and bits
    -Straighten Skidpan
    -Repack muffler
    -Carbon bits to Compliment my "Supertanium" bolts :rofl

    Looks great! My project is a 74 Supper Beetle... Not even close to that done... I have my 4RT to distract me from getting it done, it maybe a long time tell I get it finished with my trials addiction getting in the way. :rofl

    What a great job you did!

    Since you are now an expert at restoring the JTR270, please forward your address and then wait by your garage door for mine to arrive next day air for the same treatment.

    I picked mine up in 2010 in fairly good shape and gave it a once over recently but nowhere near what you accomplished.

    Now go get it covered in mud and dirt.

    Working on a '92 GT32 (sorry no picture of that one)
    was parts bike when i got it.
    Have something special planned for it...more to follow on that later
    I think beta technos and the aprilia 280 climbers both used the same
    Paioli USD 38 forks as the'92 Gt32 and all '93 GG models, so the plastics should interchange.

    Then I'll tackle restoring my '95
    Waiting for the project coffers to recoup. Expect big things.

    Great looking bike! I have a 1992 GT25 I am slowly fixing up. I just replaced the rigged up rear fender with the proper unit. Looks 100 times better with just that.

    The main photo shows Jordi Tarres sitting on the 1993 GasGas . Keen Tarres fans will note that this is not the bike that he rode trials on. The bike he is sitting on is the prototype GasGas trials bike that GasGas prepared for Jordi to convince Jordi that they could build the bike that he needed. This would therefore give him confidence to leave Beta. The prototype worked well and the rest in history. You will note that the bike that Tarres rode in the World Trials had Ducados and Oxbow livery. The bike he is sitting on does not. This photo was therefore taken some months into the new contact. The actual trials bike that Tarres rode in the 1993 Championshuip(which he won) is in the Barcelona Museum. Tarres only used one bike in 1993 and his other years , not many bikes.He said it was hard enough to get one bike perfect let alone 2 or 3.

    The bike in the inset small photo below is the actual bike that Tarres tested with GasGas. It features works lower fork yokes that have never featured on any production GasGas. It also features a modified engine over standard.

    This thread inspired me to tear my 1992 down and refurbish it, but probably not until winter. Won't be a restore as OEM parts are pricey but it needs some love aesthetically in regards to the frame and engine. I'd love to replace the tank but a new one is $424 so I think the one on my bike will suffice LOL.

    It roughly costs $35 for you and your significant other to dine out,including tip at a "Flair" restaurant,skip that 12 times and you'll have your tank money(You may be fixing dinner those 12 times though)

    i always heard Jordi traveled with the 280cc (or 270cc) jug and head when he traveled to Japan or the US .... thus the change over in the mid to late 90's to the present day 280 being the choice for most riders; near sea level that is ... GG had many problems with the big bore bikes, 320 and 380 come to mind, with overheating issues .... once they created the present day PRO-blem model, and got past the 02 trany and shifting 'issues', they have the most reliable bike on the planet ... not withstanding those who do not perform routine maintenance ... GG since 92.5 first hydraulic clutch model, straight from the 92 world round in WG ... AMOS!

    after a couple long months of other projects&finding parts, I took a 4 day weekend and buckled down on this baby

    Need to paint the tank and re dip my plastics, work out the kill switch, new chain, grips, paint the tank and tinker with some other odds and ends but after a quick carb tune up this morning she lives and breathes,
    and what a beast she is! starting this thing's like kicking over a brick wall. but it wicks right up and hits like a hammer, feels little warm (running engine ice to keep the temp down a bit) but I tested the thermo and the fan...guess they ran this hot?

    Got the 327 set. Thing is so weird to ride, hops much better than my other bikes but is HEAVY feeling. the gearing is SUPER high above 3rd gear and 1 is so low it's almost useless. throttle response is slow from idle, but it hits like nothing I've ever been on from 10-15% throttle! it chugs like a tractor and then WHAM it turns into a cheeta that pulls out from under you (like it comes onto an imaginary pipe?) and it is QUIET now that I sealed everything up. Need to get some pictures and call myLEO to make it street legal!

    Just picked up an '07 4rt so both of my gassers are on the auction block.

    $1800 for the '96 270 (exttra fender, fork seals, gaskets etc.)
    $1800 for the 92 320 ( probably needs fork seals)

    Both of these bikes were rebuilt from the ground up and are in great running shape. the 270 is my everyday bike and is better than new.
    The 320 was a street legal project I got to the "get it registered" stage when I started riding more and tinkering less.
    I have all the reiceipts, info, and manuals for both bikes (no certificate of origin on either just Bill of sale)
