So far one of the most impressive experiences here in Real was our hike to Wirikuta , or Cerro El Quemado .
( Wirikuta is a site, sacred to the Huichol Indians high in the mountains of central Mexico, between the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Zacatecas ranges.Wirikuta is the sacred land of the Huichols' deified ancestors. Huichols carry out yearly pilgrimages to Wirikuta or Huiricuta and collect peyote - a cactus containing hallucinogens - along the way. The peyote is eaten during special ceremonies and, they believe, enables the Huichols to commune directly with their ancestors and deities. The pilgrimage is one of the highlights of the Huichols' religious year )
The summit is a 2 hour hike away from Real de Catorce . We left early in the morning in order to avoid the sun at least at the first part of our hike . The trail went uphill most of the time and gave us some incredible views
At the exit of Real a dog started to follow us and he stayed with us the whole way up to the summit; up there he waited until we left and he walked us all the way back to our hotel
The further up we went, the better the view got.
Just a little bit under the summit we got to the place where the ceremonies take place and where the energetic circles are.
Being up there in the morning, alone before anybody else got up there made it more special ; we could feel the energy and peace of mind
From there it was only an other five minutes up to the summit , the place where the Huicholes leave their presents for the gods at a small shrine .
On our way back down we met first the caretaker of this place , a really interesting character who we had a long chat with and who gave us a lot of information about the surrounding mountains and desert , as well about natural medicine
And further down we crossed some pilgrims on their way up to the mountain to make some ceremonies
If I behave well,if I dont do anything wrong,if my soul and heart are clean and good, than the gods will see me with good eyes .It doesnt matter if my hat is old and my clothes are broken. If my heart is good I will turn into the reflection of the gods, like a mirror
(My translation sucks , but it should be good enough to get the idea over)
Estacion Catorce seems to run on a different time schedule
Seems like todays sunrise is announcing an other hard day at the office or maybe just an other reason to postpone departure from Real once again....
Working hard early in the morning on my RR, out in the cold, because Luisa was still asleep and after yesterdays long and hard hike she deserved not to be awaken at 6 am
Hey Julio and Luissa, there is going to be a "super moon" tomorrow night where the moon should be full and at its closest to the earth with a perigee full moon being 14% bigger and 30% brighter than usual full moons.
That should make for some excellent pics out in the semi-desert away from all the man made light.
Thought you might want to pick up a good bottle of Spanish red, some cups, and head out of town with the camera.
A few olives, maybe a nice slice of a good manchego, and some slices of chorizo...
Don't forget the serapes and the guitars LOL!
I like your attitude.
Thank you Mike !!! You gave us a great excuse to stay a few more days; BTW full moon is the day after tomorrow
Since you are taking your time I'll offer my garage for winter storage. I'll even let you shovel my drive when it snows while you and Luisa visit.
You're making your memories and my dreams all at once!!!
Be carefull with your offers, we might pick you up on them
Two faces of Real de Catorce, contradictory and complementary at the the same time , as so many things here ....

Well, the places are so great that it doesn't take much of a photographer to make nices pics
Offer is on the table now so it will stand!!

Would you consider moving to Aspen for the winter?

A very popular activity here in Real , sitting on a streetcorner not doing nothing , just talking with friends
Real without all its horses wouldn't be the same
Great pic, yes, hopefully it will be clearer.
I'll be toasting your trip, tonight as we'll be watching and be under la misma luna.
I would but...I have to live inside the KC City limits for my job. Now if you ask Nikki she may tell me to get a new job. haha
