    I believe you are unfamiliar with the original post. The question wasn't whether hard tail bikes could be ridden off road, it was about whether or not a modern dirt bike could or should be converted to a hard tail.

    I may well have misunderstood when he asked:
    I didn't think he was asking only about modern bikes, just that it was a general question.

    I know that a lot of riders are unaware of the old hardtail dirt bikes.
    My father rode a '49 Matchless hardtail on road and off.
    It was "Scrambler" too. :rofl
    They also sold a hardtail trials version of the same bike.

    Why anyone would want to do that to a modern dirt bike is another question. :eek1

    Wow...there was once someone else that actually considered building a hard tail dirt bike. Well here is one I built. Honda 600R/650 XRL Hardtail. Not quite a dirt bike any longer but it does have saddlebags so it could be an adventure bike. Just won best of show at VVMC Rally. image.jpg

    The Norton 500T was a very successful trials bike of the immediate post war era, and to my eye one of the prettiest.
    I think this is more correct than the usual replica ones shown which have the ES2 head, rather than the Model 50 style head shown here.

    Once the sprung frame reached ascendancy - mainly due to organisers changing the style of section to favour the springers - they continued to have another career as tugs for the trials outfit (hack)

    As long as you remember that you have no rear suspension, but hopefully a nice springer seat, you can easily go off road, it will be a real hoot. Back in the day, the top guys made them do amazing things.

    The most fun bike I ever had, was a pre war BSA M20, girder forks and rigid rear. Side valve engine which may do 55mph, but not for long before it over heated. Ran at 45 all day. Or as long as your face muscles could withstand being held in a stoopid grin. Watching the forks bob up and down and bouncing on the surprisingly comfortable seat.
    I don't think mine ever broke down or stopped unintentionally either.
    Tool kit had a tiny grease gun for the many grease nipples on the girder links.

    Go for it. Rigid rears are fun!

    I had at one time a Sonic Weld BSA 250 race bike, and I know this fact alone shows my age, but anyway on the race track it was very good with the rules at the time (no brakes) it worked surprisingly good. but you could feel everything on the track and the BSA sucked so I gave up on it fairly quickly I sold it to a guy in
    Chicago and he used it to ice race. The ride from the pits to the track would just about kill you.

    My father still has his Norton 500T - it's been parked in the basement since I was a wee lad. When he had it in high school and college in the early 60's it was his streetbike - no MC inspection in NJ then! (or again, now, for that matter) I remember him telling me about riding that bike to work, in the snow, with no lights, all winter one year. :eek7 At some point however, being an engineering student, tired of the rough ride and too poor to afford the Bonneville he wanted, he chopped the frame and welded in a plunger setup off a Triumph....

    I spent several seasons competing on a rigid BSA Gold Star vintage trials bike. You have to be very careful with your lines, not only in sections but also on the loop between.
    The plusses of a rigid are that the ground clearance never varies and you always know where the rear tire is. The minuses are that you can't go very fast off road and you can't use the suspension to get over obstacles.
