i read on duane ausherman's site that a harley police solo seat can fit a bmw /5 with no modifications. any details on which harley seat and how it mounts? i've seen several different styles and wasn't sure which he was referencing.

not a H-D P solo seat but a Snake Motorcycle on a R65 mono I think you can adapt the seat if you have some craft skills maybe you need to weld some tabs

Notice no rear fender. No rear sub-frame. Other changes too.

Too big. Too thick. Make something. /5 needs something proportional. HD is not it.

There are several after-market suppliers who sell solo seats and go with Airheads perfectly and are comfortable to ride.

Installation isn't that big a deal but you have to have the seat first.

The knucklehead seats are about the same area but thinner profile than the police solos. On Harley Big Twins they pivot on a mount located between the gas tanks and are sprung with a long pogo stick inserted in a frame tube. Some early Sportsters also used a sprung solo but they have a dual mini-pogo setup. The BT pogo does a great job of dampening out the bumps, even on a rigid frame. Sprung solos using little coil springs don't work too well to kill the bumps. I've seen some air ride setups for sprung solos that look interesting and might even work. All that said, if it's on a swingarm bike, mount it any way you can -- you don't need the seat springs. BTW, that looks like K-model sportster seat on the bike yellowbirds posted.

thanks for posting the pic of the seat from snake. that's more of the style that i had in mind. i'm sure i can work something up that will fit a /5 well.

duane's article mentions the harley seat when talking about the old QSL seats. i always liked those.

bob, it's good to know you're still thinking about my butt after all these years. not that there's anything wrong with that. :D

I've ridden the Harley cop bikes with that spring seat and rubber mounted handle bars. I could never figure out where the thing was going. Kind of fun in a jello sort of way. Just lean and hope. Was comfortable tho.

:scratch i'm not sure, i picked it up at a harley shop back before the chopper craze

next time i'm home i'll look and see if they'res a tag or something on it.

if i remember right i bolted a piece of pipe in the tube the toolbox sets on and it had a ubolt on the bottom

i do remember it had springs that went under the back of the seat, but i never used em

    Hmm...

Drop by Barnes and Noble and pick up one of the many HD type magazines and look up a few suppliers via the net. If you do a little research, you'll note that there are several different suppliers selling HD solo seats.

If that dosnt work for you, try dropping by your locak HD dealer and see what they have in the take-off pile. Thats where my friend Dell got the seat thats on his R60 and not only was it simple to mount but it's a beauty.

Mounting the seat can be fairly simple, if you have a way to cut steel.
