Going to try for three weeks. Slab out to CO, Engineer and Tincup Pass, Million Dollar Highway, a few ghost towns Gunnison, BlueMesa, Four Corners, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Norcal, Big Sur, Redwoods, then back by way of MT. Glacier or Crater Lake if I have time, buzz Rushmore then home...never enough time...

Here is a rough Google Map I made last year when I planned on riding my more street-oriented RS. I will lengthen the daily mileage and decrease the number of stops but this is a starting point.

Mike I see on ur map you plan to take 92 on the north side of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, VERY good choice, its a sweet ride, and I maybe saw 3 cars the whole time. Hwy 92 SUX though once you come out of the canyon area and head towards Hotchkiss and delta, so try an alternative route if you can. Also, if you make it to Mancos/Mesa Verde stop in at this place, she makes some very tasy breakfast burritos and coffee for like $3.75. I know its not oatmeal nor free but its gotta be close to falling in your Ninja budget:evil Plus there's a cool small indy beemer shop across the road, Basin Motor Works. some more pics from the ride here, http://picasaweb.google.com/capcityDC/Colorado_ride#5489110096486600498

I decided to spend this weekend visiting with family in Pennsylvania. I would spend my first night camping with Dad outside Shepardstown, WV on the Potomac then scoot up to PA on Saturday AM.

I left the burg around 3 and took 81N into MD and WV. The temps hovered between 98F and 100F with the ultimate furnace blast of 102.3F scorching me just north of Winchester. Sure hot for my Aerostich Roadcrafter suit but I manage:eek1

I grabbed a beer and some tomatoes at a grocery store off Rt9 then passed through Sheppardstown and over this bridge crossing the Potomac.
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/adHYwHO3h2DwntkDb5BUiOw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEzuMfiTg5I/AAAAAAAAUv0/wssOV7jl1Rw/s400/IMAG1354.jpg" /></a>

The Bavarian Inn is opposite this bridge and looks like a nice establishment high on the banks of the Potomac.
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/15nBXYiqgE4M-rrNB0xmFQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEzuMvLMjhI/AAAAAAAAUv4/svD1AHbFhxI/s400/IMAG1356.jpg" /></a>

After crossing the bridge, I turned right onto Canal Rd which drops to the river and follows the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal for a few miles. Here is the rail bridge crossing supports. The road under obviously does not get enough traffic to warrant a better design of the supports:patch
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/KTJB-H5NO6Tloja1ECMKVw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEzuQUhZ4MI/AAAAAAAAUv8/oamjCXD6YP8/s400/IMAG1357.jpg" /></a>

I rolled down to the Antietam Creek Campground ($10, National Park Service) and met Dad. He had arrived about an hour earlier and set up his tent and gear.
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ZSX5wfoWgqR7F7V8D6IMQw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEzubjX6aBI/AAAAAAAAUwU/yguMqnKnMEo/s800/IMAG1364.jpg" /></a>
We are literally right on the C&O.

Last time we met, he noticed my summer gloves had holes in them :shog so he bought us new pairs :clap :bow
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/WwTj7VmYASrKkYq3xhttWQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEzuRbNJlII/AAAAAAAAUwA/pxmr0tNTDp4/s288/IMAG1358.jpg" /></a>

He also brought a bunch of food :tb
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/XuWbCXsffstAsYVd7w4zjA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEzuSacin-I/AAAAAAAAUwE/mpdaqwd74gY/s400/IMAG1359.jpg" /></a>

So I made some rice, cut up the tomatoes and we had london broil and bread. Great meal despite the 90 degree heat in the shade.
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/fmjgikupnm6eU_yfHeCr6Q?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEzuTBq9XyI/AAAAAAAAUwI/wntvl7QUzkg/s800/IMAG1360.jpg" /></a>

Hot from my ride, I went for a swim in the river.
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/2dtt5_T-wE79wz9kslASmg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEzuZ4eRrZI/AAAAAAAAUwQ/i60Dc8KXoxo/s800/IMAG1363.jpg" /></a>

Brought some soap and cleaned up. The water was not much warmer than the air temp but it was nice to just sit and relax, washing the week's work downstream.
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/m1mIHTsKo43lKN6UKa3e9g?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEzuUmlNa0I/AAAAAAAAUwM/cvSAzJKhNFg/s800/IMAG1361.jpg" /></a>

We had a quiet evening and turned in around 10:00 or so. I left the canopy off my hammock to get more breeze through. Around 10:45, I awoke to large bangs which I thought was thunder. Scrambling out of my hammock, I hollered over to Dad that I needed to put on my fly and he should do the same. "I don't see any lightning!", he replied. Yeah...Whats up with that. "Those sound like explosions" We sat for a bit and decided it was too normal to be lightning so I got back in my hammock. Swinging there next to the Potomac River with Antietam Battlefield two miles behind me, I drifted to sleep imagining the great war was in action and I was just a fly on the wall. The explosions continued for about 15 minutes or more and eventually died out in a large flurry.

It turned out to be the Shepardstown Fire Dept Carnival's Fire Works
    http://www.shepherdstownfiredepartment.com/

We awoke around 6 the following morning and it was still hot. About 75F...and getting warmer. I quickly packed up my gear, made some oatmeal and coffee and enjoyed the dawn with my Dad.

After bidding farewell, I scooted up Harper's Ferry Rd N past Antietam into Sharpsburg. I just let the GPS lead me toward Gettysburg.

Along the way, the road turned into a forest and became nice and twisty :ricky I failed to take any shots since I was having a blast and paying attention. I noticed a sign for Cunningham Falls State Park so I turned and found they didn't open for another 15 minutes. Scratch that :deal
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/9KLiMpqzgWuqVTV8c7yQ8g?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEzueTQSzwI/AAAAAAAAUwY/tL7VLRFkZiE/s288/IMAG1365.jpg" /></a>

Here is what they look like (taken from online)

Eventually made my way to Gettysburg. The last time I was here was around 1999 and the old tall tower was still in place as well as the orignal visitor's center. They now have a brand new facility but I didn't tour it.

Next time when I am not so hot in my stich...maybe a nice fall trip up this way is in order.

I took part of the Auto Tour but 10mph behind a van got old sorta fast at 92F

After deciding I had seen enough for this trip, I scooted forth toward York, PA. This neat old fairground gate attracted my attention so I parked in the NO PARKING area :evil
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ASygAR8rug2X38lb4NyWBA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEzuobCqMNI/AAAAAAAAUww/8ggOmoGNmCM/s800/IMAG1371.jpg" /></a>

After passing through York, I just followed the GPS. I forgot I had set it to AVOID HIGHWAYS which took me an hour out of the way :doh
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/D1zKolM0ib2A2aTXefj26g?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEz2hTYnYkI/AAAAAAAAU0w/xhd0PNAlPkA/s800/Fullscreen%20capture%207252010%20104130%20PM.bmp.jpg" /></a>

It was only after I was about 30 min down the road that I figured this out. Oh well, the Susquehanna River was pretty. I failed to get a shot while crossing - nowhere to pull over.

Made my way though Lancaster, PA. The downtown area was surprisingly urban with many types of deli's, food shops and places to waste money. I kept on keeping on until I got to Reading.
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6H7KsWH2BaR8aH-0OXj6bQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEzupTyDY-I/AAAAAAAAUw4/CaIkM_Sk9ZU/s800/IMAG1373.jpg" /></a>

I had read they were known for their Pretzels for years so I got one (at a chain...didn't notice this till after I left)
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/g_7xw9UM7B9KJMhR7f7OiQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TEzup2Vb6WI/AAAAAAAAUw8/ku0CPoQ1prY/s288/IMAG1374.jpg" /></a>

Then made the obligatory stop along the Reading RR.

Leaving this shot, I jumped off a curb and dragged my skid plate. Glad I had it :thumb

The road up was a twisty blast up Penn Mountain escaping the city. You must ride Skyline Drive if you are ever in Reading. Apparently it was the Bee's Knees back in the day too.

I made my way up to visit family and stayed with them for the rest of the day. My cousin has having brake issues on his Jetta (warped rotors) so my host got to work fixing it in the driveway. New rotors and pads :clap

I slept like a log and awoke Sunday and joined the family in their lively church service in Bethlahem. I lingered around their place for awhile and eventually decided I needed to beat some of the heat so I was off and rolling at 11AM. I rode along the Lehigh River Gap on my way to Jim Thorpe.

    (Not my pic)

And eventually up to the town of Summit Hill. A coal mining community built on top of the hill. Pretty interesting and many identical houses in a row. Real interesting in winter I suppose but somewhat depressing. On downward into Lansford, I love the Zwiebel Turm as I learned them in German. (Onion Tower)

Down Rt 209, I came to the town of Coaldale. My best friend from childhood's grandparents hailed from Coaldale and Tomaqua down the road. I snapped these shots for them. I can recall his grandfather telling stories of the town, growing up, family still living there and the town's Russian drunk "Chezlo"

Not long after I crossed back into the valley toward 81, it began to rain. This continued getting stronger till I was riding down the highway, lightning all around me, poor visibility, many trucks and construction. I wasn't going to ruin my phone to take shots of that nonsense...or stop for that matter. On I went. When I crossed into WV near Falling Water, it began to subside and I was able to dry out for the remaining hour ride back home.

Little did I know, Loftus was right behind me riding through the same storm :webers we are silly motorcyclists.

Stats with my new Nuvi 500

Washed the bike, put it in the garage, got a pizza (which I have been craving for weeks) enjoyed an IPA and finished my VA Folk Legends book while watching this glorious sunset.

When we went, we were given a tour inside the lab where those were being built, and were able to discuss some of the engineering techniques used. Times have changed! That fancy show-and-tell lobby wasn't there when we went either.

I must begin this report by explaining my lust for Bessinger's BBQ. I have fond childhood memories of my Dad making BBQ Chicken on the grill. Just before being pulled, he would coat them with a yellowish sauce, sear em then serve them. I figured that was what everybody ate for BBQ sauce. This South Carolina "Low Country" Mustard Based BBQ sauce is not very common elsewhere and was an item acquired while living in Savannah, GA. For years, Bessinger's or Maurice's BBQ sauce has been my ultimate favorite.

This weekend, I decided it was time to pay the ONLY Bessinger's BBQ a visit. (Yes I know there is another one but it was built after a family strife and split...this one is the original Piggy Park)

I left work Friday headed for the Unwharrie National Forest south of Asheboro, NC. I slabbed over to Afton Mtn then rode 6 down to 29 and went south listening to Bluegrass and Blues through my droid phone.
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/WP8tNyPhI2myxKnRuPMEBg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TGBWWDt8WaI/AAAAAAAAU64/MakIwohE1VQ/s400/IMAG1499.jpg" /></a>

I always get a kick outta the town of "Tightsqueeze" on 29 :rofl Wonder how much money gets spent here!!
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Rjan59FzM9TL2S4E-6nIeA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TGBWVu9Z60I/AAAAAAAAU60/WbvcgCO9xGE/s400/IMAG1497.jpg" /></a>

Snapped this shot since Flutesong and 257Bob live in Reidsville :wave
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/r1ElOVG6EF6Icsf1m-VT-A?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TGBWWe0eYlI/AAAAAAAAU68/VlJJJgRgzXM/s288/IMAG1500.jpg" /></a>

    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/8t0BURrXtbdcCmWPq1VUtQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TGBWXueKbjI/AAAAAAAAU7I/ZvQuTnPDQrc/s288/IMAG1503.jpg" /></a>

I rolled down to the Pisgah Covered Bridge in the N.F. to find a couple having their picture taken with the bridge in the background. I was going to mention something about poor lighting etc but figured they could have their fun. Kept my darn mouth shut!
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/-qPa4cQsrU5xvXQd4lG4WA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TGBWWw8aZsI/AAAAAAAAU7A/dlk_25B_3Lc/s400/IMAG1501.jpg" /></a>

I didn't know where to camp. I had seen the $5 a night sites on the NF site but had only a rough idea where they were. I rode around for about an hour scouting out spots to string up but it was mostly farm fields and private land (not that it would stop me...just makes it covert)

I rolled up on this huge logging operation and rode down a logging road for a ways. Snapped this shot of the sunset sorta and decided to pitch my hammock. Not a few minutes later I hear dogs barking and a truck door slam. I'm outta here :pynd
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/5BpJGuz8H2joRwHd-Qg7Gg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TGBWXdmqXAI/AAAAAAAAU7E/vR1sVB6_AWA/s800/IMAG1502.jpg" /></a>

Finally I wound up at a small campground West Mitchell Mountain or something (I forget) off hwy 180. It had 10 sites but there was NOBODY there! I had it all to myself :jump
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/gBN2f5i9X6qLvdrA1-dBiw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TGAUFwWIq-I/AAAAAAAAU2Q/5nUjNZUMnpw/s800/101_9232.JPG" /></a>

I made half a packet of rice, had some of my remaining water, brushed my teeth and went to sleep around 9. I lay in the hammock and enjoyed the lack of people and the sounds of the woods. Ahhhhhh just how I like it. zzzzzzz

    SATURDAY
I awoke at 4:30AM Saturday and immediately got the hammock and gear packed. I made some coffee and oatmeal and was on the road by 5:00AM. Rolling in the dark, the fog was heavy and speeds were kept relatively low. I passed through a number of small towns on my roundabout way down to Charleston, relying on the GPS's "AVOID HIGHWAYS" feature.

I was cruising down Highway 52 as the sun rose in brilliant reds and orange. It is going to be glorious day.

This reminded me of Greenflyfarmer's Ride Report title. This trip is just a prep run for my ride west. I did my valve adjustment last week so this was sorta a "test" ride :uhoh

Not much for camping up this way with the swamps and bugs so I worked back toward the pines.

Cue Leadbelly Song "In the Pines"

Black girl, black Girl, dont lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night?
In the pines, In the pines, Where the sun never shine
I shivered the whole night through.

My Husband was a Railroad man
Killed a mile and a half from here
His head, was found, In a drivers wheel
And his body hasn't never been found.

Black girl, black girl, where will you go
Im going where the cold wind blows
You called me weak, and you called me the most
You called rita, bring me back home.

I was in the hammock by 7:45. I sweat and lay there enjoying the bug-free atmosphere as mosquitos and hornets (yeah mean f'ers) buzzed and slammed into the bug net. Locals would drive up the dead end Great Lake Rd, most not noticing my bike parked on the roadside with the Camo cover. On their return, they'd usually spot it and do a double take just as they were passing, spying the hammock in the tree. I swayed peacefully asleep to the sound of Owls, birds, crickets and rodents messin' around in the pines...I slept well and did not shiver one bit that night.

    SUNDAY

I awoke at 4:00AM, packed up my gear and was riding by 4:30AM. I made my way back down the miles of gravel road in the dark and fog a little slower than when I came in. My morning goal was to make the 7AM Cedar Island to Ocracoke Ferry by 6AM to get in line before it embarks. It was dark most of the ride. The only excitement came when I knocked my phone mount and the phone popped out of its holder and dangled by the charging chord:eek1 :uhoh I quickly pulled over and put that puppy in their tightly. Don't want to drop that sucker on the highway.

I made the speedlimit through all the towns, noting the few cars on the roads were police officers at this time of the morning. A suspicious speeding motorcyclist is all the excuse they needed to write a citation. I kept my cool and made sure to gas up before I got to OBX (correctly guessing gas would be $.30/gal more expensive there). The road to Cedar Island is a fast straight causeway with water on all sides. The predawn sky was a light blue with tinges of orange beginning to form. There were no cars ahead of behind me so I lit the wick. A big smile from cheekpad to cheekpad as I hurdled at triple digit toward my ferry, 77F, humid, the naturally putrid scent of decaying swamp matter so foreign to my mountain valley senses...this is what riding is about. :ricky

I pulled up to the ferry in the "NO RESERVATIONS" line behind a family from Quebec. They were nice but said only two cars without reservations could load.
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ueAWE-RsxyuHLsVRiO46fA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TGBWnaiafxI/AAAAAAAAU9Y/9VukifO84XY/s800/IMAG1559.jpg" /></a>

I set to make a cup of coffee. As soon as I had the stove out and water boiling, the car moved and the lady waved me on. Aw shucks! Threw out the hot water, put the stove away, geared up and paid my $10 to cross to OBX.

Lane four? Okay :D Front of my line.

All loaded and about to disembark. The crew chats amongst themselves. I have to wonder if they feel "stuck" with a job like this. Training to be Mariners and travelling only to be set with a back and forth ferry gig. Maybe they love it. I never asked.

On to Ocracoke. Unfortunately, I accidentally deleted all my Ocracoke shots on the camera internal memory:doh But I checked out the lighthouse and saw some of the sights in town. I had a ferry to catch so had to make it quick. Most cars just made a B-line to the Hatteras Ferry. I stopped and waiting for the next one.

I stopped at the Pony Orchard.

On through Kill Devil Hills, I stopped and picked up the NC12 OBX sticker for my side case and put it on alongside the SC Palmetto and Moon sticker. I'm a sticker whore but it reminds me where I've been, the empty space, where I'll go :norton

I stopped at Jockey's Ridge Sand Dunes
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/BnYlyrCt0ZJFS78eV-M8xQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TGCDJKr17KI/AAAAAAAAVBo/EUYqU2dp7gc/s400/IMAG1624.jpg" /></a>

But didn't get out on the dunes. Stich and all...so here is a pic

After riding to Mile 0, I took 158? back to the mainland and up to VA
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/h_jeZLKpveuDR62awCosoA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/TGCDFSgSlbI/AAAAAAAAVBM/7BvaOBWwCbs/s800/IMAG1631.jpg" /></a>

I beat feet up to 460 then rode south of the James to 95, up to Richmond to 64W then jumped off on 15 to Gordonsville and 33 back. Took a pit stop at Cabin BWDR for a chat and GS test ride :evil

Then home where the bike got a bath and I had my first shower in three days. That felt great!
