Eddie & I are in the final planning stages of our fast approaching trip and have a difference of opinion regarding Roswell NM. We don't know anyone who's been there, but I know there are plenty of inmates here who can give us some insight and help settle this dilemma.

    A little bit of intel:

We have only 9 days to explore New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado. Neither of us have travelled this area of the US on motorcycles before. We're trailering to OKC....this will be our unloading point. The usual places/roads are on our agenda...Bryce Canyon, 4 corners, Antelope Canyon, Grand Canyon, etc.

    The dilemma:
Eddie wants to go to Roswell NM......I don't.

Roswell will take us deeper into NM, eating up at least a day or a day and a half of our limited time. For me, it's not worth it to see a bunch of silly alien memorabilia. Looking at the map, there doesn't seem to be anything interesting on the way there or on the way northwest out of there. But I do see a ton of great things and roads if we head west from OKC across the northern part of New Mexico and Arizona.

I'm hoping that those of you who know that area will help me convince Eddie that it's just not worth the time it will take out of our trip. But if you convince me to go to Roswell, that's fine too. I just would like to know I won't be riding all that way just to see a town with UFO signs everywhere :ear

Skip the alien crap in Roswell. There is an impressive (and free) art and science museum in the city.

Probably not worth a special trip, but if you're into art or rocketry, you could be there a while.

Skip Roswell. With only 9 days you are only going to be able to see the highlights of the other areas. You can easily spend 9 days in just SE UT.

Rocket museum...sounds boring to me, but Eddie would probably love to spend hours upon hours there, taking picture after picture :huh

Going with your first line...."skip Roswell"....that's one vote for me

    Thanks for the reply Jamie.

I'm almost hoping that someone will post up and tell me that the ride to Roswell and then back northwest towards all "the good stuff" is worth it and that there's plenty of great roads to ride and awesome things to see, as I'm sure I'll be hard pressed to convince Eddie to skip it. I'm counting on ADVer's for their honest opinions, one way or the other.

Another vote for skipping Roswell. There are better and more interesting places to see in northern NM and in CO and UT.

(I'm a native New Mexican, and as much as I love many areas in NM, Roswell is not on the list.)

Santa Fe is an interesting city, the ride from Santa Fe to Roswell is 200 miles and on the map there are 4 towns, the road is strait and flat, while riding trough we only saw one town and it didn't appear to have been inhabited in long time.

On the other hand, we did find some good Mexican food there.:huh

    200 straight and flat miles....:puke1

this is one of the reasons we're beginning our trip hauling the bikes on the trailer from Atlanta to OKC...our time constraints, boring interstates, save tire wear.

Eddie was looking over maps again yesterday..........I'm hoping that after these replies, he's considering rerouting us straight west across the northern part of New Mexico :brow

Skip Roswell at your own peril, earthling!!

Seriously, I went to Roswell and you can see the UFO museum in about an hour. Cool, but not worth going out of your way for.

Not sure what time of year, sounds like this summer?
It's f'n hot down in the desert this time of year. I have been exlporing the four corners region for the last twenty years and try not to spend any of my free time in the desert in the summer. Probably ok if you are hoteling it and you take lots of water.
I would suggest more time in the hills. Just my $.02.

Once you guys see the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and the Durango, Silverton, Ouray area the disappointment of missing Roswell will fade away. If you spend an extra day and a half going to visit aliens you'll really regret that you don't have that time to spend in the more scenic areas. Mountains and canyons win over hot and flat every time in my book.

Suck it up Eddie - give the lady what she wants - you'll be glad you did once you get to the "good stuff".

I live in Albuquerque, and have to agree, SKIP ROSWELL!
there is SO much more to see while passing through New Mexico. If your coming in on I-40, just before you get to Albuquerque, if your not stopping here, head north just before you go through the mountain pass. turn north on 14 in Tejeres, and that will take you up to Santa Fe. When your done there, I highly recommend riding the "High road" to Taos, then taking 64 west to Tierra Amarilla, and Tres Piedres, then north to Chama, and on up to Pagosa Springs.
Lots of beautiful country, and great curvy roads. ;)
Your a welcome to PM me if you want some more suggestions as to routes...
