Heidenau K60 Tire Review

    IF history is any indicator, I STRONGLY recommend getting off the pot and ordering NOW!

    I'm "forced" to run the Michelin I won at last year's D2D, otherwise another K60 would be getting the spoons.

    If you can't get the K60, try the Mitas E07. I just put one on my Tiger to try out this year. I ordered the Dakar version and that is one STIFF sidewall. Not trying to hijack, just offering alternative if K60s sell out. I got if for just under $200 shipped from MX1Canada. I don't know off hand, but I think the K60 is cheaper. Unfortunately there is no American distributor for these.

    Will the 140 fit a GS1150 rim okay? I'm looking for a replacement for the sidecar tire that will last 10k miles. The hack tire doesn't see a lot of wear nor weight. The dealer says a 4" wide rim is too much for the 140 - is that their lawyer talking?

    You can make lots of things fit that were not intended. I had a 150/70-17 Shinko 705 mounted on my Buell Ulysses in place of a 180/55-17. It looked funny, but rode and handled pretty good. So I would think that you could replace a 150 with a 140 w/o any issues.

    Yes, it will fit. We have a bunch of people that prefer the 140 over the 150 due to its slightly narrower contact patch which reduces float when on soft surfaces.

    The 140 doesn't have the centerline tread so it wears faster on the slab. I imagine it feels a bit more secure in the soft stuff though.

    Actually they both have the solid center rib now (new this year) though it is smaller than the 150.

    140 to 150 tire choice-
    A couple years ago when the 150-17's weren't available-
    A hundred+ loaded R1100/1150/1200 riders/bikes didn't have any issues running the narrower 140 tire.

    We have hundreds of Heidenau K60's in stock!

    I've run TKC exclusively on my bike and love them so I may be a little bias but..

    I was riding this past winter in Death Valley for a week on a 1200 GSA and had a terrible time with the front tire which was a fairly new K60. Basically after I went below 25 psi it didn't hold air, any small hit to the tire or aggressive turn and the bead would brake, I was stopping about every 15 miles some times less to air up. We were in mixed sand and rock and low pressures were needed. After talking to some folks who have been running these tires on the GS it sounds like it's more of a problem with the BMW front rim with this particular tire. I would recommend a TKC front and K60 rear if you are looking for longevity and improved off road performance. I personally feel more confident and have more fun when I'm running TKC knowing that when I do go off road I don't have to think about my tire set up, off course that changes if I was to put 3K strictly on pavement.

    Clean the bead seat area of your rims - clean enough to eat off of.
    Hand wire brush any rubber etc from the rim.
    Wipe Clean.
    Lube w/ tire mount soap(Murphy's is my recommendation)

    Heidenau tire beads & your rim need to be lubed, or as you've experienced you will have bead seat LEAKS.

    We've fixed numerous improperly mounted Heidenau's coming up from the lower 48!!

    Heed manufacturers/tire sidewall maximum pressure or they will wear prematurely.

    I would appreciate tire pressure advice please. I'm running K60s front and rear on BMW F650 twin. Presently 38/40 for road. Seems to be squirrely at low speeds, wanting to dive into turns. Will this get better as more miles? What pressure is best for stretch from Coldfoot to Deadhorse?

    We have found they work and last best at about 2 psi below the max pressure stated on the sidewall.

    That is way to high, we ran 28 PSI in the front and 30 PSI rear on our DRs.

    On the 950 Super Enduro two up with house and contents 30 PSI up front and 33 PSI rear.

    Heidenaus don't like high pressure and don't need it either.

    Yeah that is for sure, we changed Ellen rear in Fresno California at about 30 deg c, left the tyre in the sun for an hour and that helped a lot.

    Maybe for you fullas in AK mums oven will work well :rofl

    Slammer218 and I just spooned a new Heidenau on last week. Not all that difficult if things are slippery and you have a way to hold the wheel still. His was on a KTM 950 (tube tire). We did his cold but it does help to warm it up a bit first.

    I tried a new technique for mounting a stiff touring tire.

    The last time I mounted a 180/55-17 Michelin Pilot Road 3 on the BMW
    K1200 GT I was surprised at how easy it went on. The tire was quite
    warm as it had been sitting in the sun. So I took the used tire,
    set it in the sun and using an infrared temp gun I measured 120F on
    the tire. Aha. Usually I leave the tires in the furnace room but that only
    gets it to 75F. I don't always have sun to pre-warm the tires so last week
    I bought a cheap ($150) tire warmer the racer boys use and heated the
    new tire for 45 minutes. The warmer cycles on and off at 175F. The tire went
    on much easier, it helped getting the old tire off too.

    Sun always helps me on the 606's, but that tire warmer you posted has to be one of the best ways I've ever seem for ease. I find spraying windex on the tire sides and rim help a lot too so that they slip on much easier. Saw this once on youtube and it works amazingly well.

    I have a gallon of a commercial tire mounting lubricant, sourced from the NAPA store.
    brand name " RuGlyde"
    some beads will FALL on the rim when lubed right.
